South Goa Places to Visit: From Palolem and Agonda to Ponda and Dudhsagar

Figures last verified

The places to visit in South Goa fall into four areas, far enough apart that each wants its own day. There's the Canacona coast around Palolem, with Agonda, Patnem and Cabo de Rama; Colva, Margao, the old houses of Chandor and Ancestral Goa at Loutolim; the temples and spice farms around Ponda; and the forest to the east, with Dudhsagar falls and the Tambdi Surla temple. If you're staying on the Canacona coast, Palolem is the base we'd choose again, and the South Goa beaches either side of it, Agonda and Patnem, fill a day, with time for a kayak in Palolem's bay and dinner on the sand after the sunset.

Short answers
  • How many days? Three for the Canacona coast around Palolem; five to add Dudhsagar and the Ponda temples or Margao. The plan
  • Where to stay? Palolem for a first visit, with food, shops and the beach close together; Agonda for quiet; Colva or Benaulim for Margao and Ponda. Where to stay
  • What does a trip cost? Four nights from late October to mid-December 2026: about Rs 10,000 to 18,500 solo, Rs 30,000 to 44,000 for two at Palolem Casa, Rs 33,000 to 59,000 for a family of four, without travel to Goa. Prices are in Indian rupees (Rs); the calculator adds dollars, pounds and euros. The budget
  • Kayaking at Palolem? We paid Rs 600 for the two of us, life jackets included. Kayaking
  • Are the shacks open? The shack policy's tourist season began on 1 September, but we found no report of Palolem's or Agonda's shacks opening when we checked. Shacks in 2026-27
  • Dudhsagar? Open since 4 October 2026, by Forest Department jeep from Collem, 8 am to 3 pm. Visitors paid about Rs 850 a person in 2025-26; we found no 2026-27 fee published when we checked. Dudhsagar
  • Which airport? Dabolim, about 68 km from Palolem by road; by the state's fare card a taxi is about Rs 1,990 to 2,985, and ours from Palolem cost Rs 2,300 in February 2026. Getting there
  • What to wear at the temples? Shoulders and knees covered at the Ponda temples. Ponda

By "South Goa" we mean the travel region, the way people search for it and the way Goa's own newspapers still write it. On the map it's now two of Goa's three districts:

  • Kushavati, Goa's new third district since 31 December 2025 (Official Gazette, Series I No. 39): the Canacona, Quepem, Sanguem and Dharbandora talukas (sub-districts), with its headquarters at Quepem. Palolem, Agonda, Patnem, Cabo de Rama, Cotigao and Dudhsagar are here.
  • South Goa district, now the Salcete, Ponda and Mormugao talukas: Colva, Margao, Ponda and Dabolim airport.

Kushavati's own website still calls Palolem one of the most famous beaches "in South Goa region".

Old Goa and Panaji aren't places in South Goa at all. They're in Tiswadi taluka, North Goa, so the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral belong with the places of North Goa, though several South Goa lists still carry Old Goa's churches. The Archaeological Survey of India's list of protected monuments and the state's Official Gazette of 2 January 2025 both put Old Goa in North Goa. The South Goa district's own website, on a page last updated in 2018, lists the galleries at Se Cathedral and the Basilica among its museums.

This was the end of our own February 2026 Goa trip. On 19 February a taxi took us from Calangute through Old Goa and Panaji, and after an evening cruise at Panaji we went on south, reaching Palolem late; we spent two nights at Palolem Casa, on Ourem Road in Palolem. On the 20th we went round the nearby beaches on a scooter, kayaked in Palolem's bay and ate by candlelight on the beach, and on the 21st a taxi took us from Palolem to Dabolim airport. So Palolem, Agonda and Patnem are the places we saw, and everything else below is research.

For each place we say what there is to see and do, and whose timings and fees we quote: the body that runs it where we found its own figures, otherwise a government tourism page, a news report or visitors' reviews, read on 8 October 2026 and the newer rules and prices on 14 October. The name that comes up most is GTDC, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation, the state's own tourism company.

Places to visit and things to do in South Goa: one area a day

The easiest way to see South Goa is one area a day, because the areas are a long drive apart. From Palolem, Agonda is about 9 km and Cabo de Rama about 24 km, but Margao is about 37 km, Ponda town about 55 km and the Dudhsagar jeep gate at Collem about 61 km. From Colva, Margao is about 7 km and Ponda about 23 km. So stay in one part and make day trips from it, or split your nights between the two.

South Goa's four areas on Goa's three districtsThe Canacona coast (Palolem, Agonda, Patnem, Cabo de Rama, Galgibag) and the forest (Collem, Dudhsagar, Tambdi Surla) are in Kushavati district. Margao and the Salcete coast (Colva, Benaulim, Chandor, Loutolim) and Ponda, with its temples and spice farms, are in South Goa district. Panaji, Old Goa and Calangute are in North Goa. Each of the four areas is shaded as one day's trip, and a red ring marks Palolem, where we stayed.KUSHAVATISOUTH GOANORTH GOAArabian SeaCanacona coastMargao and SalcetePondaThe forestPalolem, where we stayedAgondaPatnemCabo de RamaGalgibagCotigaoColvaBenaulimMargaoChandorLoutolimPonda townShantadurgaMangueshiSpice farmsCollem jeep gateDudhsagarTambdi SurlaDabolim airportPanajiOld GoaCalanguteMopa airport, further north10 kmMap data © OpenStreetMap contributors

If you have only one day in South Goa, keep to one side of it. From Palolem, that's Agonda, Patnem and Cabo de Rama. From Colva or Margao, it's Colva and Benaulim with the old houses of Chandor, or the Ponda temples and a spice farm. Dudhsagar needs a day of its own: Collem is about 61 km from Palolem, the gate takes trips only from 8 am to 3 pm, and visitors report about 90 minutes at the falls.

Coming down from the North for a day, Palolem and the Dudhsagar gate at Collem are each about 71 km by road from Panaji, so pick one area. If the one-day plan you're looking at includes Old Goa's churches, as several do (Google's AI answer for "south goa places to visit in one day" did when we checked), that part of the day isn't in the south: Old Goa is in North Goa, about 68 km by road from Palolem.

With two days in South Goa, give one to the Canacona coast and the other to Dudhsagar or the Margao and Ponda side, and plan the rest of your Goa itinerary around them.

Next time I'd give the south a bigger share of the trip than we did. For a couple, our advice is not to spend every hour sightseeing: leave time to sit together and rest, and stay in Palolem rather than making it a two-hour stop. With children or older parents, plan each day around them, and check the stairs, the bathroom and whether there's food close by before you book. If your Goa trip is short, choosing which side of Goa suits you comes before any of this.

Vandana's take: I'd keep one day in Palolem with nothing planned at all: an unhurried breakfast, a little stroll on the beach, and rest. What's the point of seeing every place in a hurry? (In Hindi; our translation.)

Three days from Palolem, or five with two more areas

For a friend with three days in the south, I'd keep them all on the Canacona coast:

  1. Day 1, Palolem. Settle in, walk the beach and stay for the sunset.
  2. Day 2, Agonda and Patnem. Agonda in the morning, back to Palolem for lunch and a rest, and Patnem in the evening: our own day of 20 February 2026, below.
  3. Day 3, a light one. The free day Vandana describes above, with nothing fixed: breakfast at leisure, time on the beach, and a second visit to whichever place you liked best.

Five days add two of the other areas, which we haven't seen ourselves, so this part is research: a day for Dudhsagar and Tambdi Surla, starting early for the Collem gate, and a day for the Ponda temples and a spice farm, or for Margao, Chandor and Colva. From Palolem those are long drives, about 61 km to Collem and about 55 km to Ponda town, so for the Margao and Ponda side a night or two at Colva or Benaulim saves the driving.

Agonda, Palolem and Patnem: our day on the Canacona coast

Agonda, Palolem and Patnem fit into one day on a scooter: on OpenStreetMap's routes Agonda is about 9 km north of Palolem and Patnem about 3 km south of it. GTDC's Palolem page puts Agonda to the south, but its own Agonda page, and the map, put it north. On 20 February 2026 we did them in this order: Agonda in the morning, back to Palolem for lunch, a rest and a kayak in the bay, Patnem in the evening, and Palolem again for the sunset and dinner on the beach. The scooter came from a local supplier, for that one day, and we filled it at a petrol pump. On our scooter days I did most of the riding, and Vandana a little, where she was comfortable with the road and the traffic. If you mean to ride one, the rules for scooter hire in Goa are worth knowing first.

We'd both keep Agonda for a morning walk on the beach. It's a good stop if you want to walk slowly and rest a little.

At Agonda, February 2026.

Agonda is a notified turtle nesting beach, and that shapes what's on it. The state published a turtle nesting plan, approved by its coastal authority in 2020, in its Official Gazette on 10 September 2026. It records that the Tourism Department allots no shacks on Agonda's sand, though shacks and cottages are allowed on private land. It puts nesting at October to March, but protects the nests through a nesting season it gives as October to May. A visitor in March 2025 found no sunbeds or umbrellas on the beach. On our walk in February 2026 we passed a protected nesting enclosure on the sand; we looked at it from outside and saw no turtles.

Agonda's beach businesses have been under court and coastal-authority orders since March 2025, so what's open at Agonda in 2026-27 may not match older reviews:

The orders at Agonda, one by one
  • In March 2025 the High Court ordered 67 establishments to halt all business.
  • In August 2026 the coastal zone authority ordered more than 20 structures off government land there.
  • On 31 August 2026 The Goan reported that the National Green Tribunal had set aside an approval for 25 cottages and a shack.

A visitor to Agonda in January 2026 found the lifeguards attentive and warned of rip currents, and the state's own Agonda page says it isn't safe to swim out too far. At Agonda we saw lifeguards and flags on the beach ourselves. We didn't swim that day, only waded at the edge; Vandana liked that and the beach walk more than a swim. Her advice at any beach is to listen to the lifeguard before going into the water.

Back in Palolem we stopped for lunch and a rest, at a shack by the beach, with the sea in front of us, and then took a kayak out from Palolem beach, below. We had no proper meal at Agonda or Patnem, and we ate dinner in Palolem both nights. We don't remember the shack's name, or the names of the places where we had dinner, so we haven't named them. One place we do remember is Bibhitaki's cafe in Palolem, where we had breakfast: Vandana found good vegetarian choices there, and liked sitting over breakfast at leisure. We're both vegetarian. For a meal in Palolem next time, Vandana would be happy with a simple dal-rice or a veg thali; not every meal has to be fancy. For something different, she'd look for a Goan xacuti made with mushroom and cashew. She'd sit at a shack by the beach again: good vegetarian food and time to talk are enough for her.

Palolem, February 2026.

In the evening we rode down to Patnem. My advice on Patnem: go if you want to see a beach that's different from Palolem. The newest Patnem reviews we found on Tripadvisor, from January to March 2025, mention sunbeds and umbrellas, lifeguards on duty and bigger waves than at Palolem.

Nav and Vandana sitting together on the sand at Patnem in warm light, people at the water's edge and a wooded headland behind them.
Patnem beach, February 2026.

We came back to Palolem for the sunset, and stayed on the beach for dinner, below. Palolem is the one Vandana would give more time to next time.

Visitors are split on Palolem town behind the beach: two who came back in the 2025-26 season after years away found it busier and dirtier, though one still called the bay pretty and safe, while a reviewer in September 2026 found it quiet and well kept.

Vandana would consider Palolem Casa, where we stayed, again for a relaxed stay as a couple, because the beach and places to eat are easy to reach from it. Before booking again, she'd check the cleanliness and the room's comfort, and ask for recent photos of the room.

Things to do in South Goa that we did: kayaking at Palolem, a candlelight dinner, the sunset

Beyond the beaches, the things we did ourselves in South Goa were kayaking in Palolem's bay (Rs 600 for the two of us), a candlelight dinner at a shack on Palolem beach (Rs 1,250 for two) and the sunset at Palolem. Cabo de Rama, Dudhsagar, the Ponda temples and spice farms, and the Salcete side are further down; we haven't been to those ourselves.

Kayaking at Palolem

On 20 February 2026, after lunch and a rest, we hired a two-seat kayak on Palolem beach. It cost Rs 600 for the two of us, and that included the kayak, a life jacket each and some basic safety instructions before we set off. Vandana remembers that sometimes we paddled together and sometimes we were teaching each other, and that there was a lot of laughter. For me the North was the excitement on this trip, and the South, the kayak included, was the slower pace.

Nav and Vandana in red life jackets paddling a yellow two-seat kayak on Palolem's bay, boats at anchor and a wooded headland behind them.
Kayaking at Palolem, February 2026.

Visitors describe Palolem's bay as sheltered, but wear the life jacket the whole time and stay in sight of the beach. In May 2026 a kayaker from Pune capsized about 400 m off Palolem and was brought back by a Drishti lifeguard on a jet ski, The Goan reported. Agree the price and how long the hire lasts before you set off: two online guides give Rs 300 an hour for a kayak, one published in 2020 and one undated, and we found no rate card from an operator or the Captain of Ports. Kayaks and boats at Palolem work through a boat owners' association and a queue, below.

A candlelight dinner on Palolem beach

That evening, after the sunset, we had dinner at a shack on Palolem beach, at an ordinary table on the sand with a candle on it. It came to Rs 1,250 for the two of us, for vegetarian food and non-alcoholic drinks. Vandana remembers the sound of the sea and that we talked for a long time; afterwards we walked a little on the beach. We don't remember the shack's name, so we haven't named it.

Under the state's shack policy for 2026-27, shacks may stay open until 11 pm and music stays inside the shack, and the Tourism Department's beach advisory says alcohol is prohibited on all beaches.

Palolem's sunset

Of the sunsets we saw in Goa, Palolem's was the one Vandana liked most. We walked a little, took photos and then sat on the sand, with nowhere we had to be. The sun sets at about 6 pm in November and December and at about 6.40 pm by late February, by our own calculation for the beach. If you're planning a honeymoon in Goa, ours was a couple's trip rather than a honeymoon, but Vandana would consider Palolem Casa again for a relaxed stay as a couple.

Palolem after sunset: our two evenings, and the 10 pm rule

Both our evenings in Palolem were quiet ones. On the first, the 19th, we reached Palolem late, ate near where we were staying and rested; there was no walk on the beach that night. On the 20th we came back from Patnem for the sunset, ate at a shack on the beach and walked a little afterwards, with music carrying across from the other shacks. We didn't go to Palolem's silent headphone party; our two nights were a Thursday and a Friday, and the listings we found put it on Saturdays.

That party, Silent Noise, has been tied to Neptune Point, at the south end of the beach. A guide updated in May 2026 still lists it on Saturday nights from November to April, but one map listing marks the old venue permanently closed and another says it has moved to Neptune, and we couldn't confirm that it ran in the 2025-26 season. If you want to go, ask where you're staying that week.

Outdoors, the music is meant to stop at 10 pm. The chairperson of the Goa State Pollution Control Board said in January 2026 that playing music after 10 pm is illegal except on 15 notified days a year, with fines of Rs 20,000 for a first offence, Rs 40,000 for a second and Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000) for repeated violations, O Heraldo reported. We found no order specific to Canacona in the English or Marathi press by 10 October 2026.

Vandana felt comfortable at night where the shacks were open and there were people about, with me beside her. On her own, she'd stay close to where she was staying and keep to lit places, and she'd know her way back before going out.

Palolem and Agonda in 2026-27: shacks, lifeguards, boats, parking and check-in ID

The state has extended its beach shack policy by a year for 2026-27, but we found no report in the English or Marathi press of when Palolem's or Agonda's shacks open. The policy as extended, published in the Official Gazette on 24 September 2026, sets the tourist season at 1 September to 31 May (The Navhind Times reported that the shack season officially begins on 1 October), lets shacks open from 7 am to 11 pm, keeps music inside the shack, and asks each shack for a portable toilet and a board with the tourism helpline, 1364. On beaches identified as turtle nesting sites there's no loud music or parties after 6 pm. Its list of government beach stretches for shacks names no Canacona beach, which doesn't by itself mean there are none: many stand on private land. Deck beds and umbrellas in front of private beach property are allowed from 1 November 2026 to 31 May 2027 and come off the sand after sunset, by a Tourism Department notice of 6 October 2026.

Where the shack rules stand
  • The extension was challenged in the High Court, which issued notice in August. On 2 September 2026, the Marathi daily Dainik Gomantak reported, the court dismissed the petition as premature, because the government hadn't yet taken a final decision, and left the petitioners free to come back.
  • On 8 October 2026 the Marathi daily Pudhari reported shack owners across Goa still waiting for the formalities they need before they can open.
  • A separate petition, reported in September 2026, challenges the 2024 law that governs beach shacks.
  • An amendment to Goa's tourist trade law has been in force since 5 October 2026; as introduced, it makes shacks on private land in the coastal zone register with the Tourism Department, with penalties of up to Rs 20 lakh (Rs 2 million). Their applications are due by 31 October 2026, the Times of India reported.

Swim only between the red-and-yellow flags, where lifeguards are watching. The Tourism Department's beach advisory, linked from its home page in October 2026, also says to stay out of the water where a red flag flies, to keep children close, that beaches are closed from sunset to 7 am, and that alcohol, drugs and smoking are prohibited on all beaches. For the Ganesh immersion days from 15 September to 4 October 2026, Drishti, the company that runs Goa's beach lifeguards, was to post lifeguards at 17 South Goa beaches, Palolem, Agonda, Patnem, Galgibag, Benaulim and Rajbag among them, Dainik Gomantak reported on 14 September; we found no roster for the 2026-27 season. In 2025 Drishti made 548 rescues across Goa, 55 of them at Colva and 50 at Palolem, O Heraldo reported.

Nav and Vandana reclining together on a blue sunbed in front of the beach shacks at Palolem, an empty sunbed beside them and the sea and headland beyond.
Palolem, February 2026.

Boats and kayaks at Palolem and Agonda work through a boat owners' association and a queue, under a Captain of Ports circular of November 2022. On Palolem beach we were asked whether we wanted a boat ride to see dolphins and the nearby beaches; we didn't take one that time. Palolem's dolphin-trip boat owners split into two rival counters in November 2025, one with 12 boats and one with 82, the Marathi daily Dainik Gomantak reported. Officials went to the beach to settle it, and we found no later report of how it ended in the English or Marathi press. Before you pay for a boat trip, we'd ask to see the boat's registration.

Parking near Palolem beach runs short at busy times. In May 2026 the Times of India reported that overflow parking goes on private land in the Ourem and Cleopatra areas and that holiday and weekend jams stretch for over a kilometre; a local resident and a councillor asked for a permanent car park. A visitor in December 2025 reported paying Rs 200 for four hours.

Expect to show ID when you check in anywhere in Kushavati. Dainik Gomantak reported on 9 January 2026 that Kushavati's administration had told hotels, guest houses and landlords, for 60 days from 5 January, to take every guest's ID and to enter tourists on the police's Pathik portal for registering guests.

Where to stay in South Goa: Palolem, Agonda, and the other kinds of stay

For a first visit to South Goa, Palolem is the easy base if you want food, shops and the beach close together, whether you're a couple, a family or travelling alone; Vandana would choose Agonda for quiet, long walks on the beach and slow days. We stayed only at Palolem Casa. Vandana chose it so we'd be close to the beach and places to eat, without arranging a vehicle every time we went out; she looked at other places too, but we don't remember their names. On a budget, she'd compare each room's facilities and its location.

We paid Rs 8,598 for our two nights at Palolem Casa, the nights of 19 and 20 February 2026, about Rs 4,300 a night. When we checked on Booking.com on 14 October 2026, its double room was Rs 4,759 to 6,050 a night with taxes for late October and mid-December 2026, and Rs 15,299 for the night of 31 December, with breakfast Rs 400 extra. Its rooms sleep two, so a family would need two. Vandana liked its relaxed feel: slow mornings, sitting out, and walking to the beach. Wherever you stay, lock the room when you go out and keep valuables in the room's safe or with you.

We haven't stayed anywhere else in South Goa, so the rest of this is research, read on 10 October 2026:

  • Hostels. Hostelworld listed nine hostels in Palolem and three places in Agonda. Those with guest reviews from 2026 include Whoopers Hostel and Whoopers Party Hostel in Palolem, Bibhitaki Hostels on the Patnem road, and Khaama Kethna Ecovillage in Agonda, which describes itself as cottages and treehouses.
  • Resorts. Of the big resorts we checked, two are on the Salcete coast, Taj Exotica at Benaulim and The St. Regis at Cavelossim, which was The Leela Goa until 2022, and ITC Grand Goa is at Arossim, near Cansaulim, in Mormugao taluka; all three are nearer Margao than Palolem. In Canacona, The LaLiT Golf & Spa Resort is at Raj Baga.

Wherever you book, ask for its registration number with Goa's Tourism Department. The state has told booking sites to list only registered hotels and guest houses, The Federal reported in December 2024; Airbnb asks its Goa hosts to show the number in their listings; and in April 2026 the department said unregistered hotels and guest houses face strict action, including closure.

Cabo de Rama is a ruined fort on a headland about 24 km from Palolem, through Agonda, and the state lists it as a paid monument, though visitors in November 2025 and February 2026 reported paying nothing. It's protected by the state and owned by the government. The state's notification of 24 December 2024, published in the Official Gazette on 2 January 2025, lists it among the monuments where you pay the fee set by its rules to enter. An amendment of November 2024 had raised that fee from fifty paise to Rs 50, for anyone over fifteen.

Visitors to Cabo de Rama from October 2023 to February 2026 describe much the same place: not much of the fort is left to see, but the views run along the coast in both directions. One adds that the climb down to a pebble beach below might be tricky for older people and small children. A visitor in February 2026 had to show ID to the guards at the gate. We found no report in the English or Marathi press of the fee being collected.

GTDC's page and the state portal give no hours for the fort, and the notification that lists it for the fee gives none. Under the state's 1980 rules, a protected monument without notified hours stays open from sunrise to sunset. Visitors' accounts differ. A group that arrived at 7.30 am in February 2025 found it still shut, with the hours in small print on the gate (the reviewer didn't say what they were), and one visitor in February 2026 wrote that the last entry is at 5.30 pm and the site closes at 6 pm. Since that group found it shut at 7.30 am, we'd go mid-morning and be out by 5 pm.

Inside the walls is St Anthony's chapel, which GTDC says is still in use; visitors found it closed in November 2023 and February 2024. Local people and taxi drivers asked for toilets at the fort in February 2026, and the Khola gram sabha (the village assembly) asked again on 4 October 2026.

The restoration plans since 2022

In February 2022 the state's archaeology department asked GTDC to withdraw its restoration tender for Cabo de Rama for want of the department's approval. That April a Times of India headline said the tender would open on 6 May. In May the Marathi daily Dainik Gomantak reported that the fort would be developed at a cost of Rs 21 crore (Rs 210 million; a crore is 10 million), while villagers said they didn't know how and asked to see the plan. In April 2025 the Archaeological Survey of India's Goa circle said it would begin an excavation at the fort. We found no report of work on either since, in English or Marathi.

Galgibag, about 9 km south of Palolem, is Agonda's partner as a turtle nesting beach. The Forest Department's South Goa marine range runs a turtle centre there, The Goan reported in February 2026, and the turtle nesting plan records that the Tourism Department allots no shacks on its sand. We found no Tripadvisor reviews of it from the 2025-26 season.

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, which the Forest Department calls Goa's southernmost protected area, is a short trip from Palolem: the state portal puts it 12 km away, and it's about 17 km by road. GTDC lists it as open from 7.00 am to 5.30 pm every day. GTDC's page gives the entry fee as Rs 5 a person, and a Forest Department fee list for sanctuaries, a file dated 2014, gives Rs 20 an adult, so ask at the gate. The Kuske waterfall inside it was one of the "low risk" waterfalls the Chief Wildlife Warden opened to visitors in July 2023, with tickets from the range office. We couldn't confirm the arrangement for 2026-27.

Butterfly beach, a small cove north of Palolem, is reached by boat from Palolem or by a rough track. A visitor in December 2025 was quoted Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 for a boat there and back, and one in October 2025 found the track muddy and slippery. Cola beach, also in Canacona, has a lagoon behind it and no proper road for the last stretch. A visitor in February 2026 was asked Rs 500 each way for two people in a jeep for the final 2 km.

Partagali Math, the Hindu monastery in Canacona, has had a 77-foot bronze statue of Ram since the Prime Minister unveiled it on 28 November 2025. Since June 2026 it has a dress code for every visitor: men in a white dhoti or lungi, and women in a sari or salwar kameez. Jeans, shorts and t-shirts aren't allowed.

Dudhsagar and Tambdi Surla: a day for the forest

Dudhsagar falls opened for the 2026-27 season on Sunday 4 October 2026, and by vehicle the only way in is a Forest Department registered jeep from the gate at Collem (also written Kulem). Under the department's order of 3 October, as the Times of India reported it, the gate is open from 8 am to 3 pm and trips are capped at 240 a day. Each jeep carries seven adults at most, life jackets are compulsory, and bookings are made online through GTDC's portal, though we couldn't find the booking page itself. The order also bars plastic water bottles and plastic carry bags inside the sanctuary and national park, and promises strict action against anyone carrying alcohol or under its influence in the circuit.

Private cars and two-wheelers can't go past the Collem gate, and we found no published figure for parking there or its fee, and the Forest Department can call off a day when the weather office issues an orange or red alert. We haven't been to Dudhsagar ourselves, so all of this is research.

Visitors in the 2025-26 season reported paying about Rs 850 a person all in for the Dudhsagar jeep safari, with about 90 minutes at the falls before the jeep comes back. We found no 2026-27 price published by the Forest Department, on GTDC's booking site as far as we could reach it, or in the reports of the order. They paid in cash at a counter at Collem, and two described queues of two to three hours; the 2026-27 order, as reported, says bookings go through GTDC's portal, and we can't tell from the reports whether the counter still sells seats. A website calling itself the "Official Dudhsagar Waterfall Goa website" sells jeep trips too. When we read it on 9 October 2026, its only contact was a phone number and a Gmail address, and we couldn't tie it, or any site like it, to GTDC or the Forest Department.

Dudhsagar's season start moves from year to year: it was 3 November in 2024, after a dispute over the online booking fees, and 10 October in 2025. Go early: a rider on the Team-BHP motorcycle forum who reached the counter late in the morning in the 2025-26 season found the day's bookings closed and came back the next day.

There's also a guided trek to Dudhsagar. GTDC, with the Forest Department and the Goa Forest Development Corporation, runs Dudhsagar trekking through its own booking site, which GTDC's news page links. When we checked, that site offered a 7.30 to 11 am slot, and asked trekkers to report at the Collem office by 10 am.

The trek site listed Rs 300 for a nature guide, Rs 150 plus GST (India's goods and services tax) for GTDC, Rs 50 for the corporation, a Rs 100 forest entry fee and a Rs 10 village garbage fee. With GST those add up to Rs 637 a person (our sum; the site shows a total only once you start a booking), while GTDC's news page gives Rs 527 plus GST; the Rs 110 between them is the forest entry and village garbage fees, which GTDC's figure seems to leave out (our arithmetic). We couldn't confirm whether the trek runs through the whole 2026-27 season, or which route it takes.

Walking along the railway line to Dudhsagar falls is banned, and it's enforced. The 2026-27 order, as reported, says entry to the falls from the railway track is strictly prohibited. The Railway Protection Force fined 32 tourists Rs 500 each for walking it on 5 July 2026, and South Western Railway has prohibited access to the falls by the railway route. Bathing in the river near Collem is banned too: O Heraldo reported on 22 June 2026 that seven people, most of them students, had drowned in it that summer despite the ban and the warning signs.

Dudhsagar's jeep circuit closes for the monsoon on a date the Forest Department sets from conditions on the ground: in 2023 it closed from 11 June, and in 2024 a closure announced for 1 June was put back a week later until the rains arrived. We found no closing notice for 2025 or 2026 from the state's information department or in the English and Marathi press. In July 2026 the Goa Forest Development Corporation announced its waterfalls, Dudhsagar among them, open for monsoon visits with trained guides, the Marathi daily Lokmat reported, without saying how visitors reach the falls.

Dudhsagar falls are in Goa's Kushavati district, not in North Goa, and since 31 December 2025 not in South Goa district either, though many people still call them South Goa. They're inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. The district's own website lists them under Dharbandora taluka, while the state portal and GTDC say Sanguem, and the Forest Department says the sanctuary spans both. Collem is about 41 km by road from Margao, and the Forest Department puts the falls 10 km beyond it.

The Mahadev temple at Tambdi Surla, about 21 km from Collem, can be a second stop if the queue and the jeep run leave you time before it closes. It's a basalt temple in the Kadamba style, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, and the Ministry of Tourism lists it as open from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. The district's website puts it in Sanguem taluka, while the district notification of 31 December 2025 lists its village, Surla, under Dharbandora. ASI's online ticket counter didn't list it when we checked, and two visitors in 2026 reported no ticket at the temple but a Rs 20 charge at the forest check-post on the way (one called it a forest entry fee for cars, the other a garbage fee).

Netravali, in Sanguem taluka by the district's website, has the bubbling lake that GTDC calls Budbudyanche Taley and lists as open from 8 am to 8 pm. It also has two waterfalls, Savri and Mainapi, which the Goa Forest Development Corporation opened to jeep safaris in January 2025 at Rs 570 a person, including a Rs 100 forest fee. We found no 2026-27 price in the English or Marathi press. Netravali is about 31 km by road from Palolem.

Ponda: the temples and the spice farms

Ponda's big temples, among them Mangueshi (also written Mangeshi), Shantadurga at Kavlem and Ramnath, announced in December 2023 that visitors must dress modestly, so cover your shoulders and knees before you go. The code was to apply from 1 January 2024. A Ramnath temple official listed shorts, mini-skirts, sleeveless tops, low-waist jeans and short t-shirts as not allowed, and the Mangueshi temple's committee said it lends a shawl and a lungi.

Ramnath's president said children under 10 are exempt from the temple's dress code, and that the temple would lend an upper cloth and a lungi rather than stop anyone going in. Shantadurga's committee brought in a similar rule in 2019, and in 2022 said it asks visitors to cover up with a shawl it provides rather than turning anyone away. A visitor in December 2025 wrote that a guard at Mangueshi scolded his wife for wearing shorts, and we found no newer notice from the temple committees in the English or Marathi press.

The Ministry of Tourism lists Shantadurga as open from 6.00 am to 8.30 pm; Shantadurga's own website gives no hours, and we couldn't read Mangueshi's. Nearby, the Safa Masjid, built in 1560 by GTDC's account, is an ASI monument, open from 5 am to 9 pm on the Ministry of Tourism's page. By road from Margao, Ponda town is about 19 km, Shantadurga about 19 km and Mangueshi about 26 km.

The spice farms around Ponda run guided walks with a lunch, and visitors in 2025 and 2026 report paying about Rs 500 a head at Sahakari and Tropical. Reviewers are warm about the guides but less so about the rest: one at Sahakari in June 2026 found the food below average, and one at Tropical in September 2024 found the tour quite short. One visitor to Savoi in January 2026 reported Rs 2,000 each. Tropical Spice Plantation's own website, the only farm site we could open, gives its hours as 9 am to 4 pm every day and no price. Since we're both vegetarian, we'd ask about the lunch when booking; at Savoi you choose vegetarian or fish in advance, a reviewer wrote, and a visitor in March 2026 found a vegetarian dish on the table.

Colva, Margao and the Salcete side

Colva beach and Benaulim are each about 7 km from Margao, the closest beaches to the town of those we measured, so they're the practical base for the Salcete side of South Goa. The same Salcete coast runs on south through Varca, about 10 km from Margao, and Cavelossim, about 17 km, and north through Betalbatim and Majorda, all in South Goa district.

A visitor to Colva in May 2026 found it crowded, and one in July 2026 wrote that photographers there press you to use their services; a February 2026 reviewer at Benaulim said the same of hawkers. On the long weekend of 2 to 4 October 2026 the 4 km stretch from Benaulim to Colva had no litter bins, the Times of India reported, because the beach cleaning contractor hadn't put them back after the monsoon; the contractor said they would be back soon.

Margao (also written Madgaon), the area's main town, is South Goa's railhead at Madgaon Junction, and Kadamba's buses to Agonda, Cabo de Rama and Canacona start there. Part of a shop structure in Gandhi Market, Margao's municipal market, collapsed on Sunday 4 October 2026, with no one hurt. The government has ordered a survey of the unsafe parts, so check before you plan a visit to the market.

In Chandor, about 10 km from Margao, the Menezes Braganza House is still a family home, and visitors pay in cash at the door. By their accounts it was Rs 200 a head in 2022 and Rs 250 in 2023, and a visitor in August 2025 thought Rs 1,000 for two too much and was given no ticket. The state portal's page for the house gives no hours. In Loutolim, about 10 km from Margao, GTDC lists Ancestral Goa and its Big Foot museum as open every day from 9 am to 6 pm.

Getting to South Goa and around it

Dabolim is the nearer airport for most of South Goa: Palolem is about 68 km from it by road, against about 101 km from Mopa. Dabolim stays open for civil flights, and its director said in September 2026 that it handles about 80 to 84 flights a day. Colva is about 32 km from Dabolim. We left Goa from Dabolim by taxi from Palolem. For the move between North and South with bags, I'd take a taxi again, and keep the scooter for local trips.

A taxi from Dabolim to Palolem comes to about Rs 1,990 by the fare card the state notified on 25 September 2026, or Rs 2,985 if the card's 50 per cent extra for one-way trips outside municipal limits applies, by our arithmetic for the 68 km. That's for a yellow-black hatchback or sedan: Rs 430 for the first 8 km, then Rs 26 a km. An SUV comes to Rs 2,480, or Rs 3,720 with the extra, and the tourist-taxi card gives Rs 2,185 for its smallest hatchback up to Rs 3,585 for an SUV. The card doesn't say which of the two an airport pick-up uses; the yellow-black card's notes say its rates apply to a round journey, which makes the one-way figure the likelier one for an airport transfer. The tourist card adds tolls and parking on top, and from 11 pm to 5 am the fare is 35 per cent more. Our Rs 2,300 from Palolem to Dabolim in February 2026 sits inside that range. Kadamba, the state bus company, runs airport shuttles from Dabolim only to Panaji (Rs 150) and Calangute (Rs 200), by its citizens' charter of January 2026; its shuttle to Margao starts at Mopa (Rs 400). On your own, a cheaper way south is a bus from Margao: an ordinary bus to Palolem comes to about Rs 35 by Kadamba's fare slabs (our sum), but we found no fare for getting from Dabolim to Margao.

Nav pulling a suitcase and Vandana walking beside him past a white taxi on a palm-lined street, on the day we moved south.
On our taxi day south, February 2026.

The Naval Aviation Museum, near Bogmalo in Mormugao taluka and about 8 km by road from Dabolim airport, is an easy stop on the way to or from a flight. It's closed on Mondays and open from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm by the Ministry of Tourism's and GTDC's pages, and the footer of the museum's own website says the same. That website, which calls itself the official one, sends you to a booking page on the same domain, which in October 2026 charged Rs 130 for Indian adults, Rs 65 for children aged 5 to 12 and Rs 260 for foreign adults. The website's FAQ still gives Rs 100 and 10 am to 5 pm. We couldn't confirm that the Navy runs the site, so check at the gate. Several guides, the South Goa district's 2018 page among them, still quote Rs 20.

Canacona station, about 3 km from Palolem, is on the Konkan Railway, but which trains stop there changes. Until 20 October 2026 the railway runs its monsoon timetable, so check your train on the railways' own enquiry service before relying on it. Kadamba's state buses, on the route list of February 2026, run from Margao to Canacona, Agonda and Cabo de Rama, from Panaji to Cabo de Rama, and from Margao to Mollem through Collem for Dudhsagar.

The state has kept app cabs such as Uber and Ola out of Goa: the Chief Minister said so in June 2025, and we found no change in the English or Marathi press when we checked. GoaMiles, GTDC's app-based taxi service, names Margao and Vasco on its homepage but not Canacona or Palolem, so on the Canacona coast we'd ask the hotel to arrange a local taxi.

Palolem, February 2026.

Four-laning of NH-66 (National Highway 66) between Bendordem and Polem, the stretch that carries the road through Canacona, was expected to start in October 2026, with preliminary work under way in September, and to take two to two and a half years, so allow for roadworks on the way.

South Goa with family, as a couple or with parents: beaches, food and after dark

South Goa's Canacona coast suits couples and anyone after quiet, and families too if you plan around the water, the walking and the long drives between areas. Each answer below says what it rests on.

For couples. Palolem as a base, Agonda and Patnem on a scooter, a kayak in the bay, the sunset and dinner on the beach, and a day kept free, as Vandana says above. Our day is the plan we'd repeat.

With family and small children. Swim only between the red-and-yellow flags, where lifeguards are watching. Drishti named Palolem, Agonda and Patnem among the beaches it would cover for the Ganesh immersion days in September 2026 (we found no roster for the season), and made 50 rescues at Palolem in 2025; in May 2026 a kayaker who capsized about 400 m off Palolem had to be brought back. Units that sleep four in and near Palolem started from about Rs 2,510 to 4,934 a night with tax on Booking.com for late October and mid-December, when we checked on 14 October 2026, and a taxi for the day suits a family better than two scooters. At Dudhsagar, visitors describe a walk of 10 to 30 minutes over streams and boulders from where the jeep stops; one wrote that it isn't for small children or older parents, another went with a five-year-old.

With friends. Dorm beds in and around Palolem started from about Rs 550 a night with tax on Booking.com for late October, and a group can split a taxi for the day (Rs 2,050 to 3,200 for up to eight hours by the 2021 card, which the September 2026 card replaced without a day rate, so agree the price first) instead of renting several scooters. Shacks may stay open until 11 pm under the 2026-27 policy, but outdoor music is meant to stop at 10 pm, and the Tourism Department's beach advisory says alcohol is prohibited on all beaches.

With parents, or anyone who finds steps hard. At Palolem, Agonda and Patnem we walked a short way from the road by the main entry lanes, with no long climb like Chapora's in the north, and then onto the sand. It differs from one side of a beach to the other, with a small step or an uneven path in places; with older parents, Vandana would park near the main entrance, though parking near Palolem runs short at busy times (above). We didn't note toilets at any of the three, so ask at a shack or cafe; under the 2026-27 policy each shack is meant to have a portable toilet. A visitor wrote that the climb down to the pebble beach below Cabo de Rama might be tricky for older people and small children. A taxi for the day spares the scooter and the midday heat, and Vandana would keep time for lunch and a rest in the middle of any day.

Vegetarian or Jain. We're both vegetarian and ate well in Palolem: breakfast at Bibhitaki's cafe, lunch at a shack and dinner on the beach. Vandana would be happy with a simple dal-rice or a veg thali, and would look for a Goan xacuti made with mushroom and cashew. Pure-veg isn't the same as a Jain kitchen, so ask for food without onion, garlic or root vegetables. At the Ponda spice farms, ask about the lunch when you book (below).

After dark. Vandana felt comfortable where the shacks were open and there were people about; her advice for going out alone is in our evenings. The Canacona coast has had reported incidents in 2026: in February a Czech woman was assaulted at Agonda and a man was arrested, in May a woman said she was harassed on her way to the beach, and in March a former council chairman complained of drug sales at Palolem and Agonda, the Marathi daily Dainik Gomantak reported. The Tourism Department's advisory says beaches are closed from sunset to 7 am. A taxi between 11 pm and 5 am costs 35 per cent more on the state's card. Goa Tourism's helpline is 1364, and 112 is the national emergency number. The safety page will cover the rest of Goa.

Coming to South Goa from abroad

Coming from abroad: visa, arrival card, the nearer airport, tickets and paying

Visa. Most visitors need an Indian e-visa. India's own fee table, dated 8 September 2026, charges $25 for a 30-day e-tourist visa from July to March and $10 from April to June for travellers from the UK, the US, Germany, France, Canada and many other countries, nothing for Russians, plus a 3 per cent bank charge. OCI cardholders (Overseas Citizens of India, foreign nationals of Indian origin) need no visa.

Before you land. Since 1 April 2026 foreign nationals and OCI cardholders fill in an online e-Arrival card within 72 hours before arrival, Business Today reported, and since 25 June 2026 every international passenger completes the Air Suvidha health self-declaration, up to 24 hours ahead, by the Indian missions' notice.

Which airport. Goa has two. For Palolem, Dabolim is about 68 km by road and Mopa about 101 km, so check which one your flight lands at; charter airlines plan to fly in from October 2026 to April 2027, among them TUI from Manchester and London Gatwick, The Goan reported in July 2026. The taxi fares are above.

Tickets. Foreign adults pay Rs 260 at the Naval Aviation Museum's booking page, against Rs 130 for Indian adults; we found no separate foreigners' fee for Cabo de Rama or Cotigao. We found no rule putting OCI cardholders on the Indian rate; ask at the counter.

Paying. Carry some rupees in cash: small shops, scooter rentals and market stalls often want cash or UPI (India's instant phone-payment system), which normally needs an Indian bank account. NPCI's UPI One World wallet lets some foreign visitors pay by UPI, loaded from a foreign card, up to Rs 25,000 at a time and Rs 50,000 a month, but it began as a pilot and doesn't cover every country. Visa and Mastercard cards issued by Russian banks don't work in India, and Mir isn't accepted, so bring dollars or euros to change.

Your hotel registers you. Hotels, guest houses and private hosts must file a C-Form with your passport and visa details within 24 hours of your arrival; the penalty, Rs 50,000 a case, falls on the host, not on you. In Kushavati, hotels were also told in January 2026 to take every guest's ID.

Every rupee figure on this page is the rupee price; in the budget below we add an "about" figure in dollars at the RBI reference rate of 13 October 2026, Rs 95.25 to the dollar, and the calculator shows pounds and euros too.

What a South Goa trip costs: solo, with a partner or with family

For four nights based at Palolem from late October to mid-December 2026, plan for about Rs 10,000 to 18,500 on your own on a budget, Rs 16,000 to 29,000 for two on a budget or Rs 30,000 to 44,000 for two at Palolem Casa, where we stayed, and Rs 33,000 to 59,000 for a family of four on a budget. That's about $105 to 195, about $170 to 300, about $310 to 460 and about $350 to 620. These are planning ranges built from the cheaper end of what's on offer, not a typical bill. Priced at the rates for 31 December every night, they come to about Rs 15,500 to 30,000 on your own, Rs 72,000 to 82,000 for two at Palolem Casa and Rs 49,000 to 86,000 for the family; that's a ceiling, since 31 December was the only peak night we priced. Rooms cost about one and a half to three and a half times as much that night, and a whole trip about one and a half to two and a half times as much. None of it includes flights or trains to Goa.

Each total adds up the dated ranges below, the same ones the calculator uses, for four nights and three days out, with three vegetarian meals a day and the three tickets listed below. Children are counted at the adult price for food and tickets, so a family's real figure may be a little lower. The taxi from the airport is the biggest single part of a solo traveller's bill; sharing it, or the bus from Margao, brings it down. Two people from abroad pay about Rs 260 to 320 more for the same trip, the foreigners' ticket at the Naval Aviation Museum.

Every line of the budget, with its source and date
  • Hostel bed: Rs 550 to 1,134 a night, Rs 1,890 to 3,747 on 31 December, taxes in: the cheapest dorm beds with a guest score of 7 or more in and around Palolem on Booking.com, for 28 October, 15 December and 31 December 2026, read on 14 October 2026. Two cheaper beds were in women-only dorms, so we left them out of the low end.
  • Budget double room: Rs 1,260 to 2,310 a night, Rs 1,680 to 5,250 on 31 December: the 12 cheapest rooms in and near Palolem with a guest score of 7 or more on Booking.com, same dates.
  • Palolem Casa, for two: Rs 4,759 to 6,050 a night for late October and mid-December 2026, and Rs 15,299 for 31 December, taxes in, breakfast Rs 400 extra, on Booking.com on 14 October 2026; we paid Rs 8,598 for two nights in February 2026. A family at this tier takes two rooms.
  • A unit that sleeps four: Rs 2,510 to 4,934 a night, Rs 6,300 to 11,682 on 31 December: family rooms, suites and apartments on Booking.com for two adults and two children, guest score 7 or more, same dates.
  • Airport and back: a taxi from Dabolim, Rs 1,990 to 2,985 each way in a hatchback or sedan and Rs 2,480 to 3,720 in an SUV, from the card notified on 25 September 2026 without and with its one-way extra (our arithmetic for 68 km). Taxi fares are notified, so there's no seasonal rate.
  • Scooter: Rs 200 to 400 a day by Goa Tourism's own page, up to Rs 719 on two rental websites with Palolem pages on 10 October 2026, and we paid Rs 500 for the day in February 2026; a Gomantak Times guide says rentals rise Rs 100 to 300 a day in the peak season. Petrol was Rs 104.10 a litre in South Goa on Business Today on 9 October 2026, and our day from Palolem to Agonda and Patnem measures about 24 km, so about Rs 50 to 56 a day at the 45 to 50 km a litre riders report for a 110cc scooter.
  • Taxi for the day: Rs 2,050 (hatchback) to Rs 3,200 (SUV) for 8 hours and 100 km, from the tourist-taxi fares in the Goa Official Gazette of 5 August 2021. The September 2026 card has no day package; by its kilometre rates 100 km would come to about Rs 3,100 to 5,200, so agree a day's price first.
  • Food: Rs 620 to 1,040 a person a day, three meals at what our own bills for two came to in February 2026, Rs 102 to Rs 345 a person a meal, among them Rs 690 for breakfast at Bibhitaki's cafe in Palolem; our candlelight dinner was Rs 625 each. We found no dated peak-season menu prices, so peak uses the same.
  • Tickets: Cabo de Rama Rs 0 to 50 (the notified fee, which visitors report isn't collected), Cotigao Rs 5 to 20, and the Naval Aviation Museum Rs 100 to 130, or Rs 260 for foreign adults.
  • Optional, in the calculator: kayaking Rs 300 a person (what we paid, Rs 600 for the two of us; two guides give Rs 300 an hour for a kayak); a dinner on the beach at Rs 625 a person, what we paid; the guided trek to Dudhsagar, Rs 637 a person. The Dudhsagar jeep isn't in it, because we found no 2026-27 fee published when we checked.

What we paid ourselves, by UPI or in cash: Rs 4,500 for the taxi from Calangute to Palolem, by way of Panaji and Old Goa, on 19 February 2026; Rs 8,598 for two nights at Palolem Casa; Rs 500 for the scooter on the 20th, before petrol; Rs 600 for the kayak and Rs 1,250 for dinner on the beach, for the two of us; Rs 690 for breakfast for two at Bibhitaki's cafe (a nice cream bowl and charcoal waffles); and Rs 2,300 for the taxi from Palolem to Dabolim airport on the 21st. Those come to Rs 18,438, without the petrol or our other meals.

Rental scooters are meant to carry yellow number plates: the Transport Department's director said in October 2022 that owners of rental bikes and cars may hire out yellow-plated vehicles, and in February 2025 the department ordered Rs 10,000 fines for renting out private vehicles, during a drive against rental car and bike operators, The Goan reported.

What to pack for South Goa, and the season dates

We were in South Goa from 19 to 21 February 2026, and the midday sun was strong. February as we found it, with every other month beside it, is on our month-by-month guide to when to go.

Under the state's shack policy the tourist season runs from 1 September to 31 May. The monsoon covered all of Goa by 6 June in 2026 and withdrew from Goa on 13 October in 2025 by IMD Goa's statement, 14 October officially, and Dudhsagar's jeep circuit closes for it on a date the Forest Department sets (when the jeeps run). At Agonda, the turtle nesting plan puts nesting at October to March.

What we'd pack for the south, from our own trip and from the rules on this page:

  • Comfortable sandals, and I'd add walking shoes.
  • Light clothes, and a light shrug, which Vandana found useful.
  • Clothes for the temples: shoulders and knees covered for the Ponda temples (their rule as reported in December 2023), and at Partagali Math a sari or salwar kameez, or a white dhoti or lungi.
  • A hat and sunscreen in a small day bag, so they go out with you, as Vandana would next time.
  • A water bottle, and not a plastic one if Dudhsagar is on the plan: the 2026-27 order, as reported, bars plastic water bottles in the sanctuary.
  • Sunglasses, a power bank and a pouch for your phone. A light bag for the day makes it easier to get around.
  • ID: hotels ask for it, Kushavati's were ordered in January 2026 to take every guest's, and the guards at Cabo de Rama asked a visitor for it in February 2026.
  • Some cash as well as UPI. We paid by UPI, which was handy for small payments, and kept a little cash too; I'd carry both again.

South Goa places to visit: FAQ

What are the best places to visit in South Goa?

The places most worth planning around in South Goa are Palolem with Agonda and Patnem on the Canacona coast; Cabo de Rama fort on its headland; Colva beach, Benaulim, the old houses of Chandor and Ancestral Goa at Loutolim near Margao; the Ponda temples and spice farms; and Dudhsagar falls with the Tambdi Surla temple in the forest to the east. They're spread out, so see one area a day. Palolem is where we stayed, for two nights in February 2026.

Which district is Palolem in?

Palolem is in Kushavati district, not South Goa district: its taluka, Canacona, is one of the four moved out of South Goa into Kushavati, Goa's new third district, on 31 December 2025 (Official Gazette, Series I No. 39). Agonda, Patnem, Cabo de Rama and Dudhsagar are in Kushavati too, while Colva, Margao, Ponda and Dabolim stay in South Goa district. People still call the whole area South Goa, and Kushavati's own website describes Palolem as a beach "in South Goa region". It's in the south of the state, not in North Goa.

What are the South Goa places to visit in one day?

One part of South Goa, not all of it. From Palolem, Agonda, Patnem and Cabo de Rama make a day; from Colva or Margao, it's Colva, Benaulim and Chandor, or the Ponda temples. Dudhsagar needs a day of its own: the jeep gate at Collem is about 61 km from Palolem, takes trips only from 8 am to 3 pm under the 2026-27 order, and visitors report about 90 minutes at the falls. From Panaji, Palolem is about 71 km by road, so a day trip from the North covers one area. Old Goa, with the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral, is in North Goa, about 68 km from Palolem, though some one-day South Goa plans include it.

How many days do you need for South Goa?

Three days cover the Canacona coast: a day to settle into Palolem, a day for Agonda and Patnem, and a free day, which is the plan I'd give a friend. Five days add Dudhsagar with Tambdi Surla, and the Ponda temples or Margao and Colva, each a day of its own because the areas are a long drive apart: from Palolem, about 61 km to the Dudhsagar jeep gate at Collem and about 55 km to Ponda town.

What is there to do in Palolem at night?

Our two evenings in Palolem, in February 2026, were quiet ones. On the first we arrived late and ate near where we were staying; on the second we watched the sunset and then had a candlelight dinner at a shack on the beach, Rs 1,250 for the two of us, with music carrying from the other shacks. Under the state's shack policy for 2026-27, shacks may stay open from 7 am to 11 pm. Palolem's silent headphone party, Silent Noise, is listed for Saturday nights from November to April by a guide updated in May 2026, but we couldn't confirm that it ran in 2025-26, so ask locally. Goa's pollution control board said in January 2026 that playing music after 10 pm is illegal except on 15 notified days a year.

Is Dudhsagar open in 2026-27, and how do you book the jeep safari?

Dudhsagar opened for the 2026-27 season on Sunday 4 October 2026, under a Forest Department order of 3 October as the Times of India reported it. By vehicle, only Forest Department registered jeeps go in, from the gate at Collem (also written Kulem), open 8 am to 3 pm, with up to 240 jeep trips a day, seven adults a jeep, booked online through GTDC, the state's tourism corporation, as the reports put it; we couldn't find the booking page itself. The order also bars plastic water bottles, plastic carry bags and alcohol in the circuit. Visitors in 2025-26 reported paying about Rs 850 a person all in, in cash at Collem; we found no 2026-27 jeep fee published when we checked. GTDC and the Goa Forest Development Corporation also run a guided trek, booked on its own site, whose listed charges added up to Rs 637 a person in October 2026. Walking to Dudhsagar along the railway line is banned.

Is Dudhsagar in North Goa or South Goa?

Dudhsagar falls are in neither, on today's map: they're in Goa's Kushavati district, created on 31 December 2025 (Official Gazette, Series I No. 39), not in North Goa and no longer in South Goa district, though many people still call them South Goa. Kushavati's own website lists them under Dharbandora taluka, the state portal and GTDC under Sanguem, and the Forest Department says the Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary they're in spans both.

Is Cabo de Rama Fort free, and what are its timings?

Cabo de Rama Fort is listed by the state as a paid monument, but visitors in November 2025 and February 2026 reported paying nothing, and the February visitor was asked for ID by the guards. The state's notification of 24 December 2024, published in the Official Gazette on 2 January 2025, lists it among the monuments where entry needs the state's fee, set at Rs 50 in November 2024, and we found no report in the English or Marathi press of it being collected. GTDC, the state portal and the notification give no hours; a visitor in February 2025 found them in small print on the gate, and one in February 2026 wrote that the last entry is 5.30 pm and the site closes at 6 pm.

How far is Palolem from Agonda and Patnem?

On OpenStreetMap's road routes, Agonda is about 9 km north of Palolem and Patnem about 3 km south of it, and Cabo de Rama is about 24 km away, through Agonda. Palolem is about 3 km from Canacona railway station and about 37 km from Margao. We did Agonda, Palolem and Patnem on one scooter day in February 2026.

How much is a taxi from Palolem to Dabolim airport?

We paid Rs 2,300 for a taxi from Palolem to Dabolim airport on 21 February 2026, by our own records, and Rs 4,500 for the taxi that brought us down from Calangute by way of Panaji and Old Goa. Palolem is about 68 km from Dabolim by road, and by the taxi fare card the state notified on 25 September 2026 that comes to about Rs 1,990 in a hatchback or sedan, or Rs 2,985 if the card's 50 per cent extra for one-way trips applies, and Rs 2,480 to 3,720 in an SUV (our arithmetic; the card doesn't say which applies to an airport run). Kadamba's airport shuttles from Dabolim go only to Panaji and Calangute. Uber and Ola don't run in Goa (the Chief Minister, June 2025; no change found in October 2026), and GoaMiles, GTDC's app taxi, doesn't name Canacona or Palolem on its homepage, so ask your hotel to arrange one; Goa Tourism advises fixing a price for the whole journey before you get in.

Which airport is nearer to Palolem, Dabolim or Mopa?

Dabolim is nearer to Palolem: about 68 km by road, against about 101 km from Mopa, on OpenStreetMap's routes. Dabolim is in Mormugao taluka, South Goa district, and stays open for civil flights; its director said in September 2026 that it handles about 80 to 84 flights a day. We left Goa from Dabolim, by taxi from Palolem.

What should you wear to the Ponda temples?

Cover your shoulders and knees for the Ponda temples. In December 2023 a Ramnath temple official listed shorts, mini-skirts, sleeveless tops, low-waist jeans and short t-shirts as not allowed, the Mangueshi temple's committee said it lends a shawl and a lungi, and Shantadurga's committee brought in a similar rule in 2019. A visitor in December 2025 wrote that a guard at Mangueshi scolded his wife for wearing shorts. Partagali Math in Canacona is stricter: since June 2026, a white dhoti or lungi for men and a sari or salwar kameez for women.

Where should you stay in South Goa?

Where to stay in South Goa depends on the side you most want to see. For the Canacona beaches, Palolem is the base we'd choose again; we stayed two nights there in February 2026, and Agonda, Patnem and Cabo de Rama are all within about 24 km. For quiet and long beach walks, Vandana would pick Agonda. For Margao, Chandor and the Ponda temples, Colva and Benaulim are closer than Palolem: Colva is about 7 km from Margao and about 23 km from Ponda. In Kushavati, hotels were told in January 2026 to take every guest's ID, Dainik Gomantak reported.

What are the Naval Aviation Museum's timings and ticket price?

The Naval Aviation Museum near Dabolim, in Mormugao taluka, is closed on Mondays and open from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, by the Ministry of Tourism's and GTDC's pages and the footer of the museum's own website. That website, which calls itself the official one, sends you to a booking page on the same domain, which listed Rs 130 for Indian adults, Rs 65 for children aged 5 to 12 and Rs 260 for foreign adults in October 2026, while the website's FAQ gives Rs 100 and 10 am to 5 pm. We couldn't confirm that the Navy runs either, so check at the gate. Several guides still quote Rs 20, the fee the South Goa district's website gave in 2018.

When do the beach shacks at Palolem and Agonda open?

The state extended its shack policy by a year for 2026-27 (Official Gazette, 24 September 2026), and under it the tourist season runs from 1 September to 31 May, though The Navhind Times reported that the shack season officially begins on 1 October. We found no report in the English or Marathi press of when Palolem's or Agonda's shacks open for 2026-27. Under the policy shacks may open from 7 am to 11 pm, and on beaches identified as turtle nesting sites there's no loud music or parties after 6 pm. Deck beds in front of private beach property are allowed from 1 November 2026, by a Tourism Department notice. At Agonda the state's turtle nesting plan records that the Tourism Department allots no shacks on the sand.

How much does kayaking at Palolem cost?

We paid Rs 600 for the two of us to kayak at Palolem in February 2026, hired on the beach, with life jackets and basic safety instructions included. Two online guides give Rs 300 an hour, and we found no rate card from an operator or the state, so agree the price and the time before you set off. Wear the life jacket and stay inside the bay: in May 2026 a kayaker who capsized about 400 m off Palolem was brought back by a lifeguard on a jet ski, The Goan reported.

How much does a trip to South Goa cost?

For four nights based at Palolem from late October to mid-December 2026, plan for about Rs 10,000 to 18,500 on your own on a budget, Rs 16,000 to 29,000 for two on a budget, Rs 30,000 to 44,000 for two at Palolem Casa, where we stayed, and Rs 33,000 to 59,000 for a family of four on a budget, without flights or trains to Goa. At 31 December rates they come to about Rs 15,500 to 30,000 on your own, Rs 72,000 to 82,000 for two at Palolem Casa and Rs 49,000 to 86,000 for the family. These add up dated room prices, the notified taxi fare from Dabolim, a scooter or a taxi for the day, vegetarian meals at what we paid, and three tickets.

Is South Goa good for a family with children or older parents?

Yes, if you plan around the water and the walking. At Palolem, Agonda and Patnem it's a short walk from the road by the main entry lanes, with no long climb, then sand; in places there's a small step or an uneven path, and we didn't note toilets, so ask at a shack or cafe. Swim only between the red-and-yellow flags that lifeguards watch: Drishti named Palolem, Agonda and Patnem among the beaches it would cover for the Ganesh immersion days in September 2026, though we found no roster for the season, and it made 50 rescues at Palolem in 2025. Cabo de Rama's path down to its beach and the walk at Dudhsagar are harder going.

What we couldn't verify

  1. Whether Cabo de Rama's Rs 50 fee is collected, and the fort's official hours. We found no report of collection in the English or Marathi press; GTDC, the state portal and the fee notification give no hours, and the state archaeology department's own website was closed to the public when we tried it in October 2026.
  2. Dudhsagar's jeep fee for 2026-27, and whether the guided trek runs all season. We found no jeep fee published by the Forest Department, on GTDC's booking site as far as we could reach it, or in the reports of the order, and we couldn't find the jeep booking page itself.
  3. When Palolem's and Agonda's shacks open for 2026-27. We found no report in the English or Marathi press when we checked in October 2026.
  4. Whether the Ponda temples' dress codes still stand as reported in December 2023, and the temples' own visiting hours. We found no newer notice from the temple committees in the English or Marathi press; Shantadurga's website gives no hours, and we couldn't read Mangueshi's.
  5. Whether Palolem's silent headphone party runs in 2026-27, and where. A guide updated in May 2026 still lists it on Saturdays from November to April, but one map listing marks the old venue closed, and we couldn't confirm that it ran in 2025-26.
  6. How the split between Palolem's two dolphin-trip boat counters ended, and which one to book with in 2026-27.
  7. Whether the Naval Aviation Museum's website, which calls itself the official one, is run by the Navy, and which price is right: Rs 130 on its booking page, or Rs 100 in its FAQ.
  8. A rate card for kayak hire at Palolem. Our Rs 600 for two in February 2026 is the only dated price we have; we found none from an operator or the Captain of Ports.
  9. Drishti's lifeguard roster and hours for 2026-27, beach by beach. We found only the list for the Ganesh immersion days of September 2026.
  10. Toilets and step counts at Palolem, Agonda, Patnem and Cabo de Rama, and parking fees for 2026-27. We didn't note them on our day, and found no published figures.
  11. Parking for Dudhsagar at Collem. Private vehicles stop at the Collem gate, and we found no published parking arrangement or fee there.
  12. Which taxi card an airport pick-up at Dabolim uses, and whether the one-way extra applies to it. The card notified on 25 September 2026 doesn't say, and we found no prepaid rate list for Dabolim.
