North Goa or South Goa: Which Side to Choose, How Far Apart They Are and What Each Costs
Figures last verified
Choose North Goa if you want to see a lot and have somewhere open in the evening; choose South Goa for slow beach days and quieter nights. With four nights or more, do both. We did both in February 2026, three nights in Calangute and then two in Palolem, and next time we'd both stay longer in Palolem. On cost, South Goa vs North Goa comparisons such as Thomas Cook's call the North the budget side, and our arithmetic agrees, mainly because of the airport taxi. What none of the comparison pages we read mentions is that Palolem has been in Kushavati district, not South Goa district, since 31 December 2025, though everyone still calls the area South Goa.
Calangute and Palolem are about 82 km apart by road, and the trip between them is a day's job with bags.
| Quiet beach days | South: Palolem, Agonda, Patnem. Palolem isn't empty, though; Vandana remembers people, shacks, shops and music there. In the North we spent calm hours at Candolim and Vagator too |
|---|---|
| Nights out | North. Outdoor music stops at 10 pm across Goa except on notified days, and the 2026 enforcement reports we found in the English press were all from Anjuna and Vagator (how they differ). We have no first-hand account of a club night on either side |
| Small children | Either; choose the hotel first. The South had more lifeguarded beaches in both counts we found (which side for whom) |
| Older parents | One base and short rides: Candolim in the North, or Palolem where the beach and food are close. Serious medical care is much nearer a North base |
| Cheaper | The North, on our arithmetic: four nights for two on a budget came to Rs 13,000 to 23,000 based in Calangute and Rs 15,500 to 28,000 in Palolem, at late-October to mid-December 2026 rates (the budget) |
| First trip | Both sides with four nights or more; with three, one side done properly |
| How far apart | Calangute to Palolem about 82 km, about 80 minutes with no traffic; there's no single North-to-South distance (distances) |
| Which airport | Mopa (GOX) for the North, Dabolim (GOI) for the South; for both sides, fly into one and out of the other |

Where each place is: North Goa, South Goa and Kushavati
Everything from Panaji and Old Goa northwards is North Goa, including Calangute, Baga, Candolim, Anjuna, Vagator and Mopa airport; Margao, Colva, Vasco, Dabolim airport and Ponda are South Goa district; and Palolem, Agonda, Patnem, Cabo de Rama and Dudhsagar are in Kushavati. Goa, a small state on India's west coast, has had three districts since 31 December 2025, when Kushavati was carved out of South Goa (Official Gazette, Series I No. 39). North Goa didn't change: Pernem, Bardez, Bicholim, Sattari and Tiswadi talukas. South Goa district kept Ponda, Salcete and Mormugao; Kushavati, headquartered at Quepem, took Quepem, Sanguem, Dharbandora and Canacona.
In everyday speech, and on this page, "South Goa" still means the whole south of the state, Palolem included. Kushavati's own website calls Palolem a beach in the "South Goa region", while the South Goa collectorate's page on goa.gov.in still listed all seven old talukas when we read it on 19 October 2026. Old Goa and Panaji are both North, though the South Goa district's own places page (southgoa.nic.in, last updated 3 August 2018) lists Old Goa's church galleries under South Goa. Mopa airport is in North Goa, in Pernem; Dabolim airport is in South Goa district, near Vasco, as are Margao, Colva and Benaulim in Salcete.
| Place | Taluka | District | Side, as people say it | Nearer airport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mopa airport (GOX) | Pernem | North Goa | North | Mopa |
| Arambol | Pernem | North Goa | North | Mopa |
| Morjim, Ashwem and Mandrem | Pernem | North Goa | North | Mopa |
| Fort Tiracol | Pernem | North Goa | North | Mopa |
| Mapusa (we went) | Bardez | North Goa | North | Mopa |
| Anjuna (we went) | Bardez | North Goa | North | Mopa |

| Margao (Madgaon) | Salcete | South Goa | South | Dabolim |
| Colva | Salcete | South Goa | South | Dabolim |
| Benaulim | Salcete | South Goa | South | Dabolim |
| Cavelossim | Salcete | South Goa | South | Dabolim |
| Betul | Quepem | Kushavati | South | Dabolim |
| Cabo de Rama | Canacona | Kushavati | South | Dabolim |
| Agonda (we went) | Canacona | Kushavati | South | Dabolim |
| Palolem (we went) | Canacona | Kushavati | South | Dabolim, about 68 km |
| Patnem (we went) | Canacona | Kushavati | South | Dabolim |
| Galgibag | Canacona | Kushavati | South | Dabolim |
| Dudhsagar falls | Dharbandora or Sanguem (sources differ) | Kushavati | South | Dabolim |
Each place's own hours, fees and our day there are on the North Goa and South Goa pages. Dudhsagar is listed under Dharbandora on Kushavati's website and under Sanguem on the state portal; it's in Kushavati either way.
The distance between North and South Goa, and how to cross
There's no single distance between North Goa and South Goa: Calangute to Palolem, the two places we stayed, is about 82 km by road and about 80 minutes with no traffic, while Panaji to Palolem is about 71 km and Margao to Palolem about 39 km. So the South Goa to North Goa distance you'll see quoted depends on which two places someone measured. The 51.1 km and 1 hour 14 minutes in Google's answer box for "north goa to south goa distance" on 19 October 2026 don't say, and Yatra, Rome2Rio and EaseMyTrip gave anything from about 57 to 74 km without saying either. The figures below are from OpenStreetMap's routing, our own run on 19 October 2026, rounded, or the figures our getting around North Goa and getting around South Goa sections already print where they agree within a few kilometres.
| From and to | By road | Drive, no traffic | Taxi, hatchback or sedan (with the one-way 50 per cent) | What we paid, February 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mopa airport to Calangute | 29 to 35 km | about 36 min | Rs 984 (Rs 1,476) | Rs 1,500, 16 February |
| Dabolim airport to Calangute | 44 to 51 km | about 50 min | Rs 1,348 (Rs 2,022) | not ours |
| Dabolim airport to Palolem | about 68 km | about 70 min | Rs 1,990 (Rs 2,985) | Rs 2,300, 21 February, Palolem to Dabolim |
| Mopa airport to Palolem | about 101 km | about 1 h 40 min | Rs 2,848 (Rs 4,272) | not ours |
| Mopa airport to Dabolim airport | about 61 km | about 70 min | Rs 1,800 (Rs 2,700) | not ours |
| Calangute to Palolem, direct | about 82 km | about 80 min | Rs 2,364 (Rs 3,547); SUV Rs 2,941 (Rs 4,411) | not this way |
| Calangute to Palolem by way of Panaji and Old Goa | about 95 km | about 1 h 40 min, before stops | not worked out (waiting time extra) | Rs 4,500, 19 February, with stops |
The fares are our arithmetic from the yellow-black taxi rates in the Official Gazette of 25 September 2026: the lower figure is the plain kilometre rate and the bracketed one adds the card's 50 per cent for a one-way trip. We couldn't find whether that one-way charge applies to airport runs, or any notification of the QR rate cards promised for mid-October, as of 19 October 2026. From 11 pm to 5 am the fare is 35 per cent more. Our Rs 4,500 for the day south, with stops and a detour, came within about 5 per cent of the card's tourist-sedan fare for 95 km. Fares by route will be on our coming page on Goa taxi fares.
We didn't time our own taxi rides. Planning them again, I'd allow about an hour from Mopa to Calangute and an hour and a half to two hours from Palolem to Dabolim, with a buffer for traffic on top. That's my plan for next time, not a measurement. Old Goa (about 68 km) comes out nearer Palolem than Panaji (about 71 km) because the two take different roads south.
By bus, Kadamba's citizens' charter, updated on 28 January 2026, lists an air-conditioned shuttle from Mopa to Calangute for Rs 200 and from Mopa to Margao for Rs 400, a Dabolim to Calangute shuttle for Rs 200, and no shuttle from Dabolim to the South. Between the sides, its Panaji to Margao shuttle runs every 10 minutes from 6.15 am to 8 pm for Rs 45 (Rs 50 with air conditioning), and 18 buses a day leave Margao for Karwar by way of Canacona; the charter doesn't print the Margao to Canacona fare.
By train, the Konkan Railway's monsoon timetable ends on 20 October 2026 and the timetable from 21 October wasn't on its site when we checked, so we give no train times. By app, there's no Uber or Ola: the Chief Minister said in June 2025 they wouldn't come to Goa, and we found no change by 19 October 2026. GoaMiles, GTDC's app taxi, names Calangute, Candolim, Anjuna, Baga, Panaji, Margao and Vasco on its homepage but not Palolem or Canacona.
South Goa vs North Goa: the difference, like for like
The biggest difference between North and South Goa for us was the shape of the day: in Calangute there was something new to see every day, and in Palolem we walked the beach, ate, rested and went out again in the evening. The rest of the table is research, compared on the same points for both sides; the sources and dates are listed at the foot of the page.
| Point | North (Calangute, Candolim, Anjuna, Vagator) | South (Palolem, Agonda, Patnem; Colva and Benaulim) |
|---|---|---|
| A day, as we found it in February 2026 | Something new to see every day, by scooter on two of them: Aguada, Sinquerim, Candolim, Anjuna, Vagator, Chapora. Food, shops and beach close to Calangute, but I was always thinking about the next stop, parking and the time back | Slower: a walk on the beach, lunch, rest, out again in the evening. No long plan needed to go out |
| Music at night | The 10 pm rule applies; the 2026 reports we found in the English press are from here: a case against a Vagator club for music past 10 pm in July, residents' protests in Anjuna and Vagator in August | The same 10 pm rule. Vandana remembers shack music in Palolem in the evening; our one English search found no 2026 enforcement report from the South |
| Shacks | 263 of the 361 shacks allotted in 2023 | 98 of 361, Canacona included |
| Lifeguarded beaches (Drishti) | 18 in December 2023; 24 in June 2026 | 27 in December 2023; 30 in June 2026 |
| Sea water quality | Calangute, Baga and Vagator named "highly polluted" by the pollution control board for March 2024 to March 2025 | Colva, Palolem and Agonda named the same, same report. Neither side is shown to be cleaner |
| Budget double room, a night, taxes in | Rs 1,103 to 1,794 in Calangute; Rs 3,149 to 5,249 on 31 December | Rs 1,260 to 2,310 in or near Palolem; Rs 1,680 to 5,250 on 31 December |
| Room for a family of four, a night | Rs 1,575 to 2,394; Rs 5,250 to 10,620 on 31 December | Rs 2,510 to 4,934; Rs 6,300 to 11,682 on 31 December |
| Hostel bed, a night | Rs 567 to 1,050 in Anjuna or Vagator | Rs 550 to 1,134 in Palolem |
| Our two hotels on 31 December | Calangute Residency 2.91 times its 28 October price | Palolem Casa 3.21 times |
| Airport | Mopa, 29 to 35 km from Calangute | Dabolim, about 68 km from Palolem |
| Getting around | Scooter, taxi, Kadamba buses; GoaMiles names Calangute, Candolim, Anjuna and Baga | Scooter or taxi; GoaMiles doesn't name Palolem or Canacona, so the hotel arranges a taxi |
| Nearest hospitals | From Calangute: Candolim's health centre about 4 km (listed as open 24 hours in 2021), the district hospital at Mapusa about 10 km, Goa Medical College about 19 km | From Palolem: Canacona's health centre about 4 km (listed in 2021 as a 24-hour emergency centre; in August 2025 it had no specialists and its trauma unit wasn't working properly, the local press reported), the district hospital at Margao about 38 km, Goa Medical College about 65 km |
| Vegetarian and Jain food | HappyCow lists Kanha Pure Veg in Candolim and Anjuna with Jain options, among four vegetarian places in Candolim | HappyCow lists Sher-E-Punjab, pure vegetarian, and a vegan cafe in Agonda, and Roots & Bloom, a vegetarian cafe on Palolem Beach Road; no Jain listing at Palolem, Agonda or Patnem |
| New Year traffic | Calangute to Baga made a non-motorised zone from 3 pm to 6 am on 31 December 2025; tourist buses barred in Calangute from 21 December to 31 January | Fields at Palolem and Devabag opened as extra parking that night; Palolem's main lot held about 20 vehicles on New Year's Eve 2021 |
| Old churches and forts | Old Goa's churches, Fort Aguada, Chapora, Reis Magos and Fort Tiracol are all North | Cabo de Rama fort, the Ponda temples, Dudhsagar and the Netravali and Cotigao sanctuaries are South or Kushavati |
Beach sellers aren't a North-only thing: in November 2025 the president of the Goa Beach Shack Owners Society complained of touts selling timeshares and club packages on the beaches from Cavelossim to Benaulim and Colva. The room prices are what the booking sites showed on 14 October 2026 for late October, mid-December and 31 December 2026, so read them as a range, not a ranking.
Where to base yourself: the best area to stay in Goa depends on the side you pick. In the North, I'd call Calangute convenient for a first trip if you plan around its crowds and traffic, and Vandana would look at Candolim too for a couple or a family who want it calmer, and she liked Anjuna and Vagator for cafes, the market and sunsets. In the South, I'd pick Palolem if you want food, shops and the beach close together, and Vandana would pick Agonda for quiet and long walks. The stays on each side, by kind of trip, are under where to stay in North Goa and where to stay in South Goa; the evenings, side by side, under each page's North evenings and South evenings.
How busy each month is, across Goa, is on our best time to visit Goa page. On its room sampling of 19 October 2026, Palolem Casa ran 1.13 to 1.43 times its late-October price from November to February and about two-thirds of it from June to September, while Calangute Residency's side-view room (not the sea-view room we stayed in) stayed at 0.84 to 0.99 times from November to May and wasn't on sale from June to September. On that run, which of our two hotels is dearer flips with the month: Calangute Residency in most months, Palolem Casa in December and February (prices by month).
Which side for whom: friends, couples, parents, children, women on their own
In Goa, friends who want evenings out suit the North; couples who want time together, the South; families and parents, whichever side has the right hotel, with the medical care nearer a North base.
Friends. I'd ask the group first what they want. For different beaches, cafes, a market and going out in the evening, the North is more convenient, and I'd pick the stay near their plans, not a room in the busiest party area just because it's a friends' trip. For the month, I'd say February for a group like that.
Couples. We'd both stay in Palolem next time. Vandana enjoyed the variety in the North, but the time the two of us spent in the South is what stayed with her: sitting somewhere to talk, walking the beach without hurrying. Our advice for a couple is to leave time to rest and be together, and to stay in Palolem rather than make it a two-hour stop. Our page on a Goa honeymoon will go further.
Older parents. I'd look at how far they can walk and how they travel. In the North I'd consider Candolim; in the South, Palolem only if the beach and food are easy to reach from the stay. I wouldn't put them through long cab rides and many stops every day. The hospitals matter more here: from Calangute, Goa Medical College is about 19 km; from Palolem it's about 65 km, with Canacona's health centre about 4 km away (without specialists in 2025) and the district hospital at Margao about 38 km.
Small children. For Vandana the hotel comes first: food on time, a room where they can rest, a comfortable bathroom and an easy way to the beach. She wouldn't choose a stay from a beachfront photo, and she wouldn't take children into the water because of a beach's name, only by that day's flags and lifeguards. Drishti covered more South beaches in both counts we found. Goa's water-sports rules, as notified in 2005, bar parasailing for children under 16. Two families writing on one family blog (TraveLynn, June 2025) found Palolem gently sloping for small children to paddle and the current at Patnem a little strong.
A woman on her own. Vandana would look at good reviews, staff on hand, the room's security and access from the main road; a good hostel if she wanted company and activities, and Palolem if she wanted rest. She wouldn't call a place safe because it's in the South or the North, and we have no crime figure that compares the two: we couldn't open the national crime bureau's district table on 19 October 2026. A 52-year-old woman who stayed alone in Agonda in January wrote on Tripadvisor in 2025 that she felt safe there. Our page on safety in Goa will go further.
Vegetarian and Jain. We're both vegetarian, and I found vegetarian food easy in Goa. Jain options were easier to find listed in the North, at Kanha Pure Veg in Candolim and Anjuna (HappyCow, read 19 October 2026); in Palolem and Agonda we found no Jain listing, so ask at the kitchen.
Who we wouldn't send where. If you want a different club or nightlife venue every night, I wouldn't tell you to base yourself in Palolem and go up and down: the taxis and the road time both add up. Stay near your main plans. And in the South I'd check a stay's exact location; not every South Goa stay is as walkable as Palolem, and a remote one with many activities and restaurants on your list needs a look at what's around first.
Vandana would find someone who dislikes crowds and music a quieter spot than Calangute's busy beach entrance, still in the North if they want it. For anyone uneasy on empty roads after dark, she'd skip a very isolated stay: she likes quiet, but she also wants food, staff and an easy way back.
How to split your nights between North and South Goa
With three nights, pick one side; with four, two and two; with five, three and two or two and three, depending on whether sightseeing or rest matters more. Changing hotels takes time out of a short trip, and I'd fix the final split only after seeing the flight times, since four nights doesn't mean four full days.
| Trip | Nav | Vandana |
|---|---|---|
| 3 nights | One side: the North for sightseeing and different places, the South for beach, walks and rest | (not asked) |
| 4 nights | 2 North and 2 South, if you want both | All four in one place, if the trip is for rest; both sides aren't a must |
| 5 nights | 3 North and 2 South for more sightseeing (what we did); 2 North and 3 South for more rest | 2 North and 3 South, with one completely free day in Palolem |
| About a week | 3 nights each side, with the hotels and airport taxi fixed first; perhaps a night in Panaji | Not asked about a week; on a repeat of our trip, a free day in Palolem and more time for Panaji and Old Goa |
The move itself costs one taxi and most of a day: Rs 2,364 to 3,547 for a hatchback or sedan on the card, by our arithmetic. In our budget below it takes the place of a day's scooter hire, so it adds about Rs 2,100 to 2,800 for one or two people; a family, who'd hire a day taxi anyway, pays about Rs 900 to 1,200 more for the SUV. Flying into Mopa and out of Dabolim adds nothing.
A night in the middle, in Panaji, is something I'd consider on a longer trip, to give the streets and Old Goa time of their own; on our five nights a third hotel would have meant packing, checking out and checking in once more. Vandana likes at least two nights in each hotel, and if she stayed in Panaji it would be for Panaji, not as a stopover. Day-by-day plans will be on our Goa itinerary page.
Our trip across both sides, February 2026
We flew from Delhi into Mopa on 16 February 2026, spent three nights at Calangute Residency, moved south by taxi through Panaji and Old Goa on the 19th, spent two nights at Palolem Casa and flew home from Dabolim on the 21st. It was our first trip to Goa together, the two of us. We used two airports because our first stay was in Calangute and our last in Palolem, and I didn't want to go all the way back north just to catch a flight. I weigh the fare and the airport transfer together; a cheap flight that adds a long road isn't a good deal to me. Vandana liked going straight to the hotel with the luggage on arrival and straight to the airport on the last day, with no sightseeing squeezed in.
In the North we had a scooter for two days, 17 and 18 February, and rode to Fort Aguada, Sinquerim and Candolim, the Mapusa Carnaval, the Anjuna market, Vagator and Chapora at sunset. Those days are in our North Goa plan by days and the parade on our Goa Carnival page. In the South, on the 20th, it was Agonda in the morning, Palolem for lunch and a rest, Patnem in the evening and Palolem again for the sunset, all in our three days in South Goa. Around busy junctions and beach entrances in the North I had to watch the traffic, turning vehicles, people and parking more; the South felt more relaxed to ride, though Palolem's entrance roads had people and vehicles too. I did most of the riding; Vandana took the scooter on short stretches where she felt comfortable. Licence, helmet and deposit will be on our coming page on renting a scooter in Goa.

The day south was a transfer and a sightseeing day, not a beach day. We checked out of Calangute, saw Old Goa and Panaji, took the Mandovi cruise in the evening and reached Palolem late at night. A taxi was the right call with the bags and the stops; I wouldn't do a transfer that long on a scooter with luggage. I didn't note how many hours it took, and the day had parking, walking, lunch and stops in it, not just driving.
Vandana liked seeing the places on the way, but the day got long and there wasn't time to sit back at every stop, because the last hotel was still ahead; what she wanted on arriving was to settle in and rest. Next time she'd keep fewer, clearer stops, give more time to whichever of Panaji and Old Goa interests you more, and if the cruise is that evening, keep the next morning light.
What we paid, by UPI or in cash: Rs 10,200 for three nights at Calangute Residency and Rs 8,598 for two at Palolem Casa; Rs 1,500 for the taxi from Mopa, Rs 4,500 for the taxi south and Rs 2,300 for the taxi from Palolem to Dabolim; Rs 1,000 for the North scooter (two days) and Rs 500 for the South one (one day). In the North, for the two of us, Rs 4,600 for parasailing and a jet ski at Candolim, Rs 1,000 for the Mandovi cruise and Rs 10,000 for two Thai massages, and Rs 50 at Fort Aguada's upper fort; in the South, Rs 600 for the kayak and Rs 1,250 for the candlelight dinner at Palolem on the 20th, vegetarian food and non-alcoholic drinks at an ordinary shack table on the sand, both for the two of us. A few meals we have amounts for: Rs 490 at Navtara in Mapusa before the parade on 17 February, then Rs 550 for dinner for two at Calangute Residency's restaurant that night (dal, jeera rice and roti), and Rs 690 for breakfast for two at Bibhitaki in Palolem, where Vandana had the nice cream bowl and the charcoal waffles. We have no amount for our other dinner in Palolem or for the lunch there. By our arithmetic, the North side comes to Rs 29,390 and the South side, with the taxi south, Rs 18,438: Rs 47,828 in all, without the flights, the petrol or our other meals. That's a bill with water sports, a cruise and a spa in it, not a budget; the budget is below.
The flights, Delhi to Mopa and Dabolim to Delhi, came to about Rs 21,000 for the two of us, booked about six weeks ahead; that's my memory of the fare, not a ticket. Our nights came to about Rs 3,400 in Calangute and about Rs 4,300 in Palolem, but those were different rooms on different dates, so they say nothing about which side is dearer: for 28 October, 15 December and 31 December 2026 (read 14 October), Palolem Casa was cheaper than the sea-view room we stayed in at Calangute Residency.
| What people say or ask | What the evidence says | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| "Clean beaches then head south" (a Tripadvisor answer, 2025) | The pollution control board named Calangute, Baga and Vagator, and Colva, Palolem and Agonda too, "highly polluted" for March 2024 to March 2025. For safety, we found no crime figure that compares the two sides | Not shown either way |
| "Which side of Goa is cheaper?" (a question Google suggests) | On our budget at late-October to mid-December 2026 rates, the South cost more for every party, mainly the longer airport taxi; at 31 December rates the gap closes | The North, on our arithmetic |
| "Old Goa is in South Goa" | It's in Tiswadi taluka, North Goa district; the South Goa district's own places page, last updated in 2018, lists its church galleries under South Goa | Not true |
| "Palolem is in South Goa district" | Canacona moved to Kushavati district on 31 December 2025; one official page still lists the old seven talukas | Not since 31 December 2025; still "South Goa" as people say it |
| "North to South Goa is 51.1 km" (Google's answer box) | It names no ends; Calangute to Palolem is about 82 km, about 80 minutes with no traffic, before any stops | Depends on the two places |
| "Is there Uber in Goa?" | No Uber or Ola; GoaMiles names the North's beach towns, Panaji, Margao and Vasco, not Palolem; Kadamba buses and hotel taxis run on both sides | No Uber; not stuck either |
| "The only waterfall in Goa" is Dudhsagar, in the south (Thomas Cook, 5 Feb 2026) | Arvalem falls are in Bicholim, North Goa, on the state portal; Dudhsagar is in Kushavati | Not true |
| "Palolem is crowded now and parking is bad" | Reports from New Year's Eve 2021 and May 2023 describe a small, full lot; for New Year 2025-26 extra fields were opened for parking. The May 2026 crowd report we found was about Calangute and Baga | True at New Year; we found no 2026 report for Palolem |
Arriving by air: which Goa airport for which side
Fly into Mopa (GOX), in Pernem, for the North and into Dabolim (GOI), near Vasco, for the South; if you're doing both, arrive at one and leave from the other. The distances and taxi fares to each are in the table under the distance between the sides.
For flights from abroad this winter: Aeroflot's Moscow flights are scheduled into Dabolim from 3 October 2026, and Air India Express has filed a daily Dabolim to Dubai service for the winter 2026 schedule, "subject to change". For any other airline, check which of the two airports your flight uses when you book. Mopa's own website mentions fixed-rate taxis at the counter and a Kadamba stop outside the terminal but prints no fares. Visas, the e-Arrival card, paying and the C-Form are in the "from abroad" fold on our North Goa page and South Goa page.
What North Goa, South Goa or both cost: solo, two or a family
For four nights on a budget outside the peak, two people should plan for about Rs 13,000 to 23,000 based in Calangute, Rs 15,500 to 28,000 based in Palolem, or Rs 16,500 to 29,000 for two nights on each side. That's about $135 to 240, about $165 to 290 and about $175 to 300, at the RBI reference rate of 13 October 2026, Rs 95.25 to the dollar. At 31 December rates the same trips come to Rs 21,000 to 38,000 in the North and Rs 17,500 to 41,000 in the South. None of it includes flights or trains to Goa.
Each party is priced on its own: a solo traveller pays a whole room or bed and a whole taxi, two people share them, and a family needs a room that sleeps four and an SUV. Nothing here is the couple's total halved or doubled.
| Who and where | The room | Outside the peak (late October to mid-December 2026) | At 31 December 2026 rates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo: North only, based in Calangute | a hostel dorm bed in Anjuna or Vagator | Rs 8,000 to 15,000 (about $85 to 155) | Rs 12,000 to 21,000 |
| Solo: South only, based in Palolem | a hostel dorm bed in Palolem | Rs 10,000 to 18,500 (about $105 to 195) | Rs 15,500 to 30,000 |
| Solo: Both: 2 nights North, 2 South | a hostel dorm bed in Anjuna or Vagator, then a hostel dorm bed in Palolem | Rs 11,000 to 19,500 (about $115 to 200) | Rs 16,000 to 28,000 |
| Two of you: North only, based in Calangute | a budget double room in Calangute | Rs 13,000 to 23,000 (about $135 to 240) | Rs 21,000 to 38,000 |
| Two of you: South only, based in Palolem | a budget double room in or near Palolem | Rs 15,500 to 28,000 (about $165 to 290) | Rs 17,500 to 41,000 |
| Two of you: Both: 2 nights North, 2 South | a budget double room in Calangute, then a budget double room in or near Palolem | Rs 16,500 to 29,000 (about $175 to 300) | Rs 21,000 to 42,000 |
| Family of four: North only, based in Calangute | a room that sleeps four in Calangute (quadruple or family room) | Rs 27,000 to 44,000 (about $280 to 460) | Rs 42,000 to 77,000 |
| Family of four: South only, based in Palolem | a unit that sleeps four in or near Palolem (family room, suite or apartment) | Rs 33,000 to 58,000 (about $350 to 610) | Rs 48,000 to 85,000 |
| Family of four: Both: 2 nights North, 2 South | a room that sleeps four in Calangute (quadruple or family room), then a unit that sleeps four in or near Palolem (family room, suite or apartment) | Rs 31,000 to 52,000 (about $330 to 550) | Rs 46,000 to 82,000 |
Why the South comes out dearer: mainly the airport taxi, Dabolim to Palolem and back on the card against Mopa to Calangute, about Rs 2,000 to 3,000 more for the trip; and for a family, the room for four, which cost more in or near Palolem on the dates sampled. The split stay pays for one more taxi, the move south, and arrives at Mopa and leaves from Dabolim. Every row uses the cheaper room tier on both sides, one scooter range for both sides (a day taxi for the family), and three vegetarian meals a day at what we paid, from our Carnival day's meals in the North up to our dearest meal, a Palolem breakfast; we have no full South meal day with amounts, so the food line is the same for both. Tickets are left out because the two sides' sights are different places, not different prices.
What the rooms are, and what they don't tell you: a hostel dorm bed, a budget double or a room that sleeps four, the cheapest with a guest score of 7 or more on Booking.com, with the taxes the site added, read on 14 October 2026 for 28 October, 15 December and 31 December 2026. The samples recorded the price, not breakfast or the cancellation terms, so check both when you book.
For our own two hotels, the listings we read on 14 October 2026 showed: Calangute Residency's sea-view room with breakfast, and its 31 December room non-refundable and the last on sale; GTDC, which runs it, charges 100 per cent for cancellations from 23 December to 1 January. Palolem Casa's listing says breakfast is Rs 400 extra. Hotel GST is 5 per cent on rooms up to Rs 7,500 a night and 18 per cent above, since 22 September 2025, as tax publishers summarise the notification. The 31 December rate is charged for every night, so the peak column is a ceiling, not a week's average.
Our own trip isn't one of these rows: we stayed five nights, three in a sea-view room at Calangute Residency and two at Palolem Casa, and what we paid is under our trip. To change the nights, the room tier or the tickets, use the calculators on our North Goa trip budget and South Goa trip budget.

North Goa or South Goa: FAQ
Which is better, North or South Goa?
Neither North Goa nor South Goa is better for everyone. North Goa suits you if you want to see a lot of places and have restaurants, markets and music open in the evening; South Goa suits slow beach days, long walks and quieter evenings. With four nights or more you can do both, as we did in February 2026: three nights in Calangute, then two in Palolem. Next time Vandana and I would both stay in Palolem, and I'd give the South more of the trip.
Is Panaji (Panjim) in North Goa or South Goa?
Panaji is in North Goa. It's the state capital and the headquarters of North Goa district, in Tiswadi taluka, on the south bank of the Mandovi.
Is Old Goa in North Goa or South Goa?
Old Goa is in North Goa, in Tiswadi taluka, east of Panaji. The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral are both there. Some websites list Old Goa under South Goa, including the South Goa district's own places page (southgoa.nic.in, last updated 3 August 2018); that's wrong.
Is Palolem in South Goa district?
Palolem hasn't been in South Goa district since 31 December 2025. It's in Canacona taluka, which moved into Kushavati, Goa's new third district, on that date (Official Gazette, Series I No. 39). Agonda, Patnem, Cabo de Rama and Dudhsagar are in Kushavati too. Everyone still calls the area South Goa, and so do we.
Are Calangute and Baga in North Goa or South Goa?
Calangute beach and Baga beach are both in North Goa, in Bardez taluka, as are Candolim, Anjuna, Vagator and Chapora. Mopa airport is in North Goa too, in Pernem, about 29 to 35 km from Calangute by road; Dabolim airport is in South Goa district, near Vasco.
What is the distance between North Goa and South Goa?
The distance from North Goa to South Goa depends on the two places, because there's no single point called North Goa or South Goa. Calangute to Palolem, the two places we stayed, is about 82 km by road, about 80 minutes with no traffic on OpenStreetMap's routing (19 October 2026). Panaji to Palolem is about 71 km, Margao to Palolem about 39 km, and the two airports are about 61 km apart. The 51.1 km Google showed for 'north goa to south goa distance' on 19 October 2026 doesn't say which two places it measured.
How do I get from North Goa to South Goa?
A taxi from North Goa to South Goa is simplest with bags: on the card notified on 25 September 2026, Calangute to Palolem direct comes to about Rs 2,364 for a hatchback or sedan, or about Rs 3,547 with the card's 50 per cent one-way charge, by our arithmetic. We paid Rs 4,500 on 19 February 2026, going by way of Panaji and Old Goa with stops. By bus, Kadamba's charter of 28 January 2026 lists a Panaji to Margao shuttle every 10 minutes for Rs 45, and buses from Margao to Karwar through Canacona. Uber and Ola don't run in Goa; we found no change to that by 19 October 2026.
Which airport should I fly into for North Goa and for South Goa?
Fly into Mopa (GOX) for North Goa and Dabolim (GOI) for South Goa. Mopa is about 29 to 35 km from Calangute and about 101 km from Palolem; Dabolim is about 68 km from Palolem and 44 to 51 km from Calangute. If you're doing both sides, fly into one and out of the other, as we did: Mopa in, Dabolim out. It adds nothing to the taxi bill and saves going back.
Is South Goa cheaper than North Goa?
South Goa isn't cheaper than North Goa on our arithmetic; it comes out more expensive. For four nights on a budget at late-October to mid-December 2026 rates, two people come to about Rs 13,000 to 23,000 based in Calangute and Rs 15,500 to 28,000 based in Palolem, mostly because the taxi from Dabolim to Palolem is longer than the one from Mopa to Calangute. A family pays more in the South for a room that sleeps four, too. At 31 December rates the gap closes: Rs 21,000 to 38,000 in the North against Rs 17,500 to 41,000 in the South.
Is North Goa or South Goa better for families?
Either side of Goa works for a family; choose the hotel first. Vandana would look for meals on time, a room you can rest in, a comfortable bathroom and an easy way to the beach, not a beachfront photo. South Goa had more beaches with lifeguards in the two counts we found, 27 to 18 in December 2023 and 30 to 24 in June 2026. Serious medical care is much nearer a North base: Goa Medical College is about 19 km from Calangute and about 65 km from Palolem.
Is North Goa or South Goa better for couples?
For time together, South Goa. Vandana and I would both stay in Palolem next time; she enjoyed the North's variety, but the time the two of us spent in the South is what stayed with her. Stay a few nights rather than making it a two-hour stop. If you want to see a lot, a couple of nights in the North first works well, as it did for us.
Is South Goa safer than North Goa?
No figure we found shows that South Goa is safer than North Goa. We couldn't open the National Crime Records Bureau's district table when we tried on 19 October 2026, so we have no side-by-side crime figure. Vandana wouldn't call a place safe just because it's in the South or the North; she'd look at reviews, staff, room security and how the stay is reached from the main road.
Can I stay in South Goa and go to North Goa for the nightlife?
I wouldn't advise staying in South Goa if you want to go out in the North most nights: Calangute is about 82 km from Palolem, and every night out becomes two long taxi rides. Stay near your evenings. Outdoor music has to stop at 10 pm across Goa except on notified days, and the 2026 enforcement reports we found in the English press, searched on 19 October 2026, were from Anjuna and Vagator in the North.
Where should I go first, North Goa or South Goa?
Go first to the side nearer your arrival airport: Mopa in, North Goa first, then South Goa and out of Dabolim, as we did. It lets the trip end on the slower side. I look at the flight times before fixing the split, because four nights doesn't mean four full days.
How many days do you need for North and South Goa?
Three nights is enough for one side of Goa; I'd pick one and not change hotels. With four nights, two and two works if you want both. With five, I'd do three North and two South for sightseeing, or two and three for rest, and Vandana would do two North and three South with one completely free day in Palolem. With about a week, I'd split it three nights each side.
Does South Goa have nightlife?
South Goa has some evening life: Vandana remembers music from the shacks on Palolem beach, and more people out at sunset, when we were there in February 2026. We have no first-hand account of a club night on either side. On Tripadvisor, a traveller who stayed in Agonda in January wrote that it isn't a place where things stay open until 2 am.
What we couldn't verify
- Whether the September 2026 taxi card is in use, whether its 50 per cent one-way charge applies to airport runs, and when the promised QR rate cards appear. The card was notified on 25 September 2026; we found no notification of the QR rate cards as of 19 October 2026, so the fares above are the card's rates worked out by us.
- How long Calangute to Palolem takes in traffic. Our figure is OpenStreetMap's time with no traffic, and we didn't time our own ride.
- Families with small children, side by side. We found one dated family account covering both sides and no direct comparison.
- What a day's meals cost in the South. We have one Palolem breakfast with an amount, not a full day, so the budget's food line, from our North Carnival day up to that breakfast, is the same for both sides.
- Crime figures by side. The National Crime Records Bureau's district tables didn't open for us on 19 October 2026, and we found nothing that compares North and South Goa, so we print no safety figure.
- Which airport some foreign flights use this winter: Qatar Airways, TUI and Oman Air for 2026-27, and how often Aeroflot flies.
- Trains between the sides after 21 October 2026, the Margao to Canacona bus fare, and the night markets' season dates. None was published where we looked.
If you've stayed on either side lately, tell us what you found at [email protected]; if you're happy to be named, we'll credit you.
Still deciding between the sides?
Send us your dates, who's going and your flights at [email protected]. We can't promise to answer each one.
