Joshimath to Auli Distance: 11 to 16 km, and the One Fixed Fare on Record

Figures last verified

Joshimath to Auli is one winding road of about 11 to 16 km, and on a clear day it takes 45 minutes to an hour. A taxi has one officially fixed fare, set in December 2024, and a seat in a shared jeep costs far less; both are just below. In winter the road can close with little or no notice, so the call that matters is the one you make to Jyotirmath the morning you go up.

Short answers
  • How long does it take? 45 minutes to an hour on a clear day, up a road of hairpin bends. The road on a map
  • Taxi fare? Rs 1,500 one way, Rs 2,500 same-day return, five to a vehicle, fixed in December 2024; nothing newer when we checked in October 2026. The fare
  • Shared jeep? We paid Rs 200 each, in cash, in June 2025; the drivers near the bus stand told us where it leaves from. Our three trips
  • Is there a bus? Not for the climb alone; one long-distance Auli-Haridwar bus a day. The bus
  • Does it close in winter? Yes, sometimes without notice. Call your hotel the morning you go up. Winter closures
  • The ropeway? Closed since January 2023. The ropeway's status

We've been up this road three times, three different ways. I drove our Baleno up in October 2024 and our Thar in January 2026, at night, after five hours in Jyotirmath waiting for the road to open; in June 2025 we came by bus from Delhi and took a shared jeep. Jyotirmath has been the tehsil's official name since 2024, and it's still Joshimath on most maps and booking apps, so we use both.

The fare, the road reports, the bus timetable and the cab prices are research, which we read in September 2026 and checked again on 10 October 2026; each is credited where it appears.

Three trips, three ways up

October 2024 was the easy one. On the morning of 19 October I drove our Baleno up from our hotel in Jyotirmath, leaving at about half past nine, and we were at our resort at Lower Auli by about half past ten. Once we'd left our bags we went on up towards Auli and spent the day on foot, on the open slopes and the meadow by the forest. The long drive up from the plains two days earlier is on the drive from Delhi.

June 2025 was the trip we did without a car, by bus and shared jeep. The bus from Delhi set us down by the main bus stand in Jyotirmath (the bus from Delhi is on all the ways up to Auli). We had tea, asked the local drivers near the stand, and they told us where the shared jeeps for Auli leave from. The driver was still gathering passengers, so we sat in and waited too; the bags were fitted in, we paid, and once the jeep was full it set off. We paid Rs 200 each, in cash, Rs 400 for the two of us, as our expense note has it.

The jeep set us down where the shared vehicles stop in Auli, not at our hotel's door. From there we walked up to GMVN, the state's Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam rest house, with our bags, me with the big one and Vandana with her small one, and stopped once or twice on the way up to get our breath back before we reached the reception. On 5 June we came down the same way: with our bags to the jeep stop, a shared jeep down to Jyotirmath, and the bus to Delhi.

January 2026 was the trip that taught us about this road. I drove our Thar up from Greater Noida, and we reached Jyotirmath at 17:45 on 24 January to find we couldn't go on up. Our trip sheet for that evening just says "road khulne ka wait" (our translation: waiting for the road to open). We kept getting news by phone from local drivers and our hotel, had tea and a vegetarian dinner in town, and sat in the car for a while. At 23:00 word came that the road was open, and we went up. The papers we read afterwards say the road had closed that day after vehicles skidded on the snow, then reopened to four-wheel drives only; they don't say at what hour.

By then I'd been driving all day. On the snowy bends my whole attention was on the road, and even a short stretch felt long, because we kept slowing down and stopping. When the hotel's lights came into view, it was a great relief. Vandana remembers the dark outside and the snow in the headlights, and looking now at the road, now at me; she was sleepy but couldn't properly sleep. Once we reached the room, she says, a hot cup of tea and somewhere to sit were the best of all.

We checked in at 01:20 on the 25th, at a hotel near the TV Tower at Sunil, still below the top. We'd told them by phone that we'd be late, and the staff took us and our bags up to the room. The next morning I was tired from the driving and Vandana from the late night, and we took breaks on our walk in the snow.

If a friend were arriving in Jyotirmath

I'd tell them to reach Jyotirmath in daylight and go up the next morning. On my next winter trip I want to break the drive at Rishikesh, reach the hotel while it's light and keep an extra day, because I don't want to spend another arrival night waiting for the road and then driving it in the dark. For October, this is the plan I'd give a friend from the day they reach Jyotirmath:

  1. Arrival day: leave Rishikesh in the morning, and when you reach Jyotirmath, rest and walk round the market.
  2. Next morning: go up to Auli for the meadow, the forest walks and the views, and stay somewhere with a view.
  3. The morning after: look around a little, then head back down.

For a friend on a tight budget, I'd say stay in Jyotirmath and go up to Auli for the day. And for one who mainly wants snow, the second half of January or February, with two full days up at Auli; before setting off, ask your hotel for fresh photos of the snow and for news of the road.

How much is a taxi from Joshimath to Auli?

The last officially fixed fare is Rs 1,500 one way and Rs 2,500 for a same-day return, five passengers to a vehicle, set in December 2024. When we checked again in October 2026 we found no newer figure in the Hindi or English papers. The English guides we read gave ranges with no source or date; the one officially fixed figure was in the Hindi papers, in Amar Ujala's Chamoli edition.

How the fare was fixed: the timeline
  • 17 December 2024: Manoj Mehra, president of the Jyotirmath-Auli Taxi Union, told the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Jyotirmath that the union ran 50 taxis and that a booking up to Auli cost Rs 2,000, or Rs 3,500 while it was snowing.
  • 29 December 2024: on the instruction of the District Magistrate, Sandeep Tiwari, the SDM, Chandrashekhar Vashisht, met the taxi unions, the police and the Nagar Palika, and between them they fixed Rs 1,500 one way and Rs 2,500 for a same-day return, five passengers to a vehicle, from 30 December 2024. Both figures came in below the union's.
  • Why then: the fare was part of the crowd plan for New Year 2024-25. When Auli's parking fills up, tourist vehicles are parked at Ravigram Maidan and people go on by local taxi. That didn't happen to us in January 2026: the wait was for the road, and when it opened our own car went up.
  • Per vehicle, not per passenger: Rajya Sameeksha reported the same figures but worded them per passenger. We read it as per vehicle, since Rs 7,500 for a carload one way would have been news in itself.
  • 19 December 2025: the same SDM told taxi and hotel owners to put up rate lists, without naming a new figure, and we've found none printed since.

If you book a cab online, look at the distance before you pay. Auli is spread across two villages in the Census records, and one booking engine, Gozo Cabs, treats each as a separate place. When we priced this climb on Gozo Cabs in October 2026, a sedan to one name came up as about 8 km for Rs 3,279 and to the other as about 12 km for Rs 3,326, one way before GST. Plain "Auli" came up as 460 km and Rs 8,195, as if you were booking an intercity trip from the town you'd be starting in.

Does the road close in winter?

Yes, sometimes without notice, and our five-hour wait was one evening in a week of it. Between December and March the road can shut for snow or frost, open to four-wheel drives only, and shut again. We couldn't find a single official notice for any of it: the Public Works Department's road-closure list didn't mention this road once all that winter, and neither did the district, police or tourism sites. What we know of that week we pieced together afterwards from the district papers and police statements.

The last week of January 2026, day by day
  • 23 January 2026: the season's first real snowfall, and the Jyotirmath to Auli road closed.
  • 24 January, the day we arrived: vehicles skidded on the snow, the road closed again, then reopened the same day to four-wheel drives only. Chamoli's Superintendent of Police, Surjeet Singh Pawar, confirmed both on the record.
  • 25 January, our day up there: frost formed at Sunil, TV Tower and Kichad Bend, and tourist vehicles were stopped beyond TV Tower. Our hotel was at Sunil.
  • 27 and 28 January: more snow left Auli under two to three feet, and the road was one of seven shut across Chamoli district that day.
  • 30 January: frost was still forming from Sunil all the way to Auli, with jams at several points and more snow forecast.

Sometimes there is an order. In early March 2025, with a weather alert out after heavy snow and the avalanche at Mana, the Jyotirmath administration stopped tourists going up to Auli and held them in Jyotirmath, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) saying the alert ran into the Monday, 3 March; they were let up again on 4 March.

So between December and March, call your hotel or the taxi stand in Jyotirmath the morning you plan to go up, and ask what the road did overnight. Coming down on the 26th we left at 08:45 and took the snowy top stretch slowly, stopping on a narrow bit to let an oncoming car through.

Is there a bus?

Only one, and it isn't much use for this climb. Uttarakhand Transport Corporation's timetable lists a single Auli-Haridwar service, 05:30 from Haridwar and 04:30 from the Auli end, which means it goes through Jyotirmath. The timetable doesn't say whether it actually climbs to the slope or stops at the stand in town, and it's timed for the long run to the plains. For a same-day transfer, plan on a shared jeep or a taxi from town, as we did in June 2025.

The ropeway that used to make all of this optional hasn't run since January 2023, and there's no date for it to reopen. The whole story is on the Auli ropeway page. If a friend told me they wanted Auli for the ropeway, I'd tell them to check it's running before they book and to arrange the road transfer anyway. We've gone up by road all three times, and for the views, the walks, the green meadows and the snow, Auli is worth the trip without it.

A path cleared through the snow, January 2026.

Should you drive up yourself?

In a clear month, yes, if long hill drives are comfortable for you; in winter, only with a four-wheel drive and the morning call. I'd tell a friend to take their own car only if they're at ease on a long mountain drive, and to set off in the morning and reach the stay in daylight. You save both taxi fares and come down when you like, and our Baleno took about an hour to our resort at Lower Auli in October 2024.

January is a different road. In January 2026 it closed, reopened to four-wheel drives only and tightened again within three days, and a sedan on ice, with a driver who has never handled one, is another thing entirely. We got up that night because the road had reopened to four-wheel drives and the Thar is one, so our January run proves less than it looks: it says nothing about what a sedan could have done. Before that trip I checked the Thar's tyres, brakes, fluids, spare wheel and four-wheel drive, and kept a torch, charging cables, water, snacks and warm jackets within reach. On the snow I kept the speed down and left a good gap to the car in front. Frost is one of the things that catches drivers on this road: on 10 December 2024 an Army vehicle coming down from Auli slid on frost about 4 km below Auli and went off the road into a ditch, and two soldiers were lightly hurt. In winter, make the morning phone call before you decide, and if either the car or the driver isn't built for snow, take the local taxi.

Before you go up: cash, signal and what to carry

Carry some cash; our signal wasn't dependable up at Auli. In January 2026, with my phone on Airtel and Vandana's on Jio, calls and messages went through in town and at the hotel, but while we walked about up at Auli the signal was sometimes weak and payments were slow to load. We kept some cash with us, and we'd paid the shared jeep in cash in June 2025. Discover with Dheeraj, a travel guide updated on 9 October 2026, says there's no ATM at Auli itself, only two or three in Jyotirmath. TrekGo (August 2026) says Jyotirmath's SBI and PNB machines often run out in the winter rush and suggests drawing cash in Rishikesh or Srinagar, and to fill up with fuel in Jyotirmath, because there's no fuel station at Auli.

Jyotirmath itself sits on ground that has been subsiding: the land subsidence of January 2023 is why the ropeway stopped. As of October 2026 the town is still clearing buildings declared unsafe: Amar Ujala reported on 6 October 2026 that the administration had served notices and begun the process of removing 21 government buildings, with demolition due to start soon, after more than 55 unsafe private ones had been demolished. ETV Bharat reported in April 2026 that scientists from the Wadia Institute say the ground is still moving, extremely slowly, and protective work began that month in Sunil ward, the first stretch of the Auli road above town. On the market and hotel streets we walked, we didn't notice any sign of it. Vandana would check a hotel's exact location and the latest local word on the building and the area before booking in town, and follow any local restrictions.

If you're coming straight up from the plains, take the height seriously. Jyotirmath is at about 1,875 m and Auli between 2,500 m and 3,050 m. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's travel health guidance says anyone who isn't acclimatised and sleeps at 2,450 m or higher is at risk of altitude illness, and advises against going from low altitude, under 1,200 m, to a sleeping altitude above 2,750 m in a single day. Its main sign is a headache, often with loss of appetite, dizziness, tiredness or nausea; if the symptoms get worse despite rest, go down. A night in Jyotirmath before going up, as in the plan above, breaks the climb. We didn't do that in January 2026: we drove straight up at night to our hotel below the top, and felt only tiredness the next morning. This is general information, not medical advice.

What Vandana packs for Auli in winter, and would tell a friend to pack:

  • For outside: thermals, warm sweaters, a padded jacket, a woollen cap, a neck warmer, gloves, and shoes with a good grip.
  • Spare socks and a dry set of clothes.
  • For the room: warm nightwear and slippers.
  • For the sun and the cold: moisturiser, lip balm, sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • A power bank and some snacks, because up on a walk the next place to eat can be a while away.

After a walk in the snow, Vandana says, dry socks and comfortable clothes help more than anything else, and that next time, more care over a spare pair of socks and the grip on her shoes would help.

In June, Vandana says, light clothes did for the day and a light jacket for the evening, with walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a water bottle.

Joshimath to Auli FAQ

What is the Joshimath to Auli distance?

Joshimath to Auli is one winding road of about 11 to 16 km. Because it winds so much, the figure depends on where in Jyotirmath you start and how far up Auli you go: the Chamoli district administration's own Auli page gives 16 km, and OpenStreetMap's route planner gives 13.7 km from the town to the village. The climb runs from Jyotirmath (Joshimath) at about 1,875 m up to Auli, which the same district page puts between 2,500 m and 3,050 m. A couple of popular travel pages put it at 10 km, below that range.

How do I get from Joshimath to Auli?

By road: your own car, a shared jeep or a private taxi from Jyotirmath. In June 2025 we found the shared jeeps by asking the local drivers near the Jyotirmath bus stand. There's no local bus for the climb alone, only a long-distance Auli-Haridwar service, and the ropeway hasn't carried a passenger since January 2023. In snow the road can be limited to four-wheel drives or closed outright, and we couldn't find a notice for it on any district, police, PWD or tourism site.

How much does a taxi from Joshimath to Auli cost?

The last officially fixed rate for a Joshimath to Auli taxi is Rs 1,500 one way and Rs 2,500 for a same-day return, five passengers to a vehicle. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Jyotirmath set it with the taxi unions on 29 December 2024, and when we checked in October 2026 there was no newer figure in Hindi or English papers. Other figures run from one traveller's Rs 1,000 for a private drop in February 2024 to Rs 3,000 on one 2021 travel guide for a local four-wheel drive in winter, and in December 2024 the taxi union's own booking rate was Rs 2,000, or Rs 3,500 in snow.

How much is a shared jeep from Joshimath to Auli?

We paid Rs 200 each, in cash, for a shared jeep from Jyotirmath up to Auli in June 2025. The local drivers near the Jyotirmath bus stand told us where the shared jeeps leave from, and ours set off once it was full. No official seat fare has been set, and the guides that print one give no source; the officially fixed Joshimath to Auli fare is for a whole taxi, Rs 1,500 one way for up to five passengers.

Is there a bus from Joshimath to Auli?

Only one: Uttarakhand Transport Corporation's Auli-Haridwar service, 05:30 from Haridwar and 04:30 from the Auli end in its timetable as we read it in October 2026. Its timetable doesn't say whether it climbs to the slope or stops in Jyotirmath, and there's no local bus for the climb alone. Day to day, shared jeeps and private taxis run it.

Why do cab apps show such different prices for Joshimath to Auli?

Because Auli is spread across two villages in the Census records, Auli Laga Joshimath and Auli Laga Salude, and some booking engines treat each as a separate place from plain Auli. One of them, Gozo Cabs, showed about 8 km for one name, about 12 km for another, and 460 km with a Rs 8,195 sedan fare for plain Auli when we priced it in October 2026.

Can the Joshimath to Auli road close in winter?

Yes, the Joshimath to Auli road can close in winter, sometimes without warning. In the last week of January 2026 it closed outright, reopened to four-wheel drives only, then tightened again when frost formed at three spots. We were in Jyotirmath on 24 January and waited about five hours for it to open. We couldn't find an official notice for any of it, so call your hotel or someone in Jyotirmath the morning you travel. Sometimes there is an order: on a weather alert in early March 2025, the Jyotirmath administration stopped tourists going up to Auli and held them in Jyotirmath until 4 March.

How much elevation do you gain between Joshimath and Auli?

From about 1,875 m at Jyotirmath to somewhere in Auli's own 2,500 m to 3,050 m range, depending where you're headed. There's no single gain figure to quote, because those two ends come from different sources. It is enough to bring on altitude symptoms for some people, particularly if you've driven straight up from the plains the same day. We did that in January 2026, arriving after midnight, and felt only tiredness the next morning, Nav from the driving and Vandana from the late arrival.

Is Jyotirmath the same place as Joshimath?

Yes. The tehsil was formally renamed Jyotirmath in 2024, but Joshimath is still what booking platforms, bus operators and most maps use. We use both names together for that reason.

Is the Joshimath to Auli ropeway still running?

No. The Joshimath to Auli ropeway hasn't carried a passenger since January 2023, and when we checked in October 2026 no reopening date had been announced. The state plans a replacement line that would go on from Auli to the Gorson slope. Full detail is on our ropeway page.

What we couldn't verify

  1. Whether people already up in Auli on 25 January 2026 were stopped from coming down. Every report describes it going up, none says whether anyone was stopped coming down, and our own trip can't answer it: we came down on the morning of the 26th.
  2. What a shared-jeep seat costs this season. No official seat fare has been set; two 2026 travel guides print Rs 100 to Rs 200 a seat without saying where it comes from, and Rs 300 to Rs 500 a person is just the official taxi fare split five ways.
  3. Whether the taxi fare has changed since December 2024. Nothing newer has been printed that we could find in October 2026, but the rate lists ordered in December 2025 carried no number in the papers.
  4. Whether Auli's own chairlift, a different lift from the closed ropeway, is running now. The last report of it carrying riders is from 25 January 2026.

Changelog
  • First published.
  • Rewritten around our own three trips up this road.
  • Added the taxi union's own December 2024 booking rate, Rs 2,000 or Rs 3,500 in snow, and took the Rs 300 to Rs 500 per-person figure out of the fare table: it is only the official fare split five ways. The table now says which figure is an order, a quote or a payment.
  • Added what we paid for a shared-jeep seat in June 2025 (Rs 200 each), a map of the climb, and our own account of each trip; checked the fare and the road again.
