Udaipur Itinerary: My Five Days Alone, and How to Do It in Three or Two
Figures last verified
This is Vandana's trip: she went to Udaipur alone, from 9 to 14 November 2025, and tells it here. The prices, hours and routes are our research, checked in October 2026; the amounts marked as hers are for her trip of November 2025. Where she's quoted, it is her Hindi, translated into English.
For a Udaipur itinerary, three full days are enough for the main sights, and two will do if you choose carefully and don't hurry; I had four nights and five days, and that let me rest most afternoons. I'd wanted to spend a few days beside Udaipur's lakes for a long time, so I went alone: an overnight bus from Delhi, a private room at a hostel near Jagdish Chowk, and the airport on the fifth morning. Below are my days in order and our three-day and two-day cuts of them, then where to stay, getting around, what I did after dark as a woman alone, and what a trip like this costs for one, two or a family.
Our estimate for four nights for two people on a budget, in mid-November 2026, is Rs 17,500 to 37,000, about $185 to 390. That's built from prices we sampled, not from what I spent; what I did pay is under what I paid.
| How many days | Three full days for the main sights; two if you choose carefully and don't hurry; four nights for an unhurried trip like mine (how many days) |
|---|---|
| Two days | Old City, City Palace and the Dharohar show; next day the boat to Jagmandir and Fateh Sagar, unhurried (the two-day plan) |
| Three days | My picks: the Old City and the show; the boat and Fateh Sagar; Badi Lake and Sajjangarh by car (the three-day plan) |
| Where to stay | The Old City near Jagdish Chowk to walk to most stops; ask whether a car reaches the door (where to stay) |
| Trip cost, four nights | Two people Rs 17,500 to 37,000; solo in a private room Rs 13,500 to 29,000; a family of four Rs 40,000 to 77,000, mid-November 2026, our estimate (trip cost) |
| Evenings alone | Busy, lit routes, a ride's number and pickup checked, ride details shared, the Delhi cabs' plates checked (after dark) |
| When | November to February are the cool months; Diwali (8 November 2026) and New Year push room prices up (when to go) |
| From Delhi | Overnight sleeper bus or train, or about 1 hour 20 minutes by air (getting there) |

How many days are enough for Udaipur?
Three full days are enough for Udaipur, and two cover the Old City, the show, the boat and Fateh Sagar if you leave the rest for another trip. Udaipur is a city in Udaipur district, in southern Rajasthan; the district's headquarters is the city. Most of what a first visit wants is close together: Jagdish Temple, City Palace, Gangaur Ghat and Bagore Ki Haveli are all a short walk apart on the east shore of Lake Pichola. The rest is a few kilometres out. On OpenStreetMap's routing (our run of 20 October 2026), Fateh Sagar is about 3 km by road from Jagdish Temple and Saheliyon Ki Bari about 3.4 km. Sajjangarh is about 7.6 km to the palace on its hill, Badi Lake about 10 km and the airport about 25 km.
City Palace alone took me about four hours, and if I went again I'd still give it and the ghats unhurried time; the moments I liked best were the ones with no hurry. That's why we'd plan three days rather than two. Of the 13 itinerary pages we read on 20 October 2026, counting day trips, six plan two days, six plan three and one plans five. None plans four in the city, as I did, and none of the 13 itinerary pages we read prices it for one, two and a family.

Udaipur itinerary 2 days: the Old City and the show, then the lake
For 2 days in Udaipur, I'd keep City Palace, Jagdish Temple, Gangaur Ghat, the Dharohar show and the Pichola boat: the Old City and the show on the first day, the boat and Fateh Sagar on the second. That's my keep list from the five days, laid out in two by us, not a trip I did in two. It drops Badi Lake, Sajjangarh, Saheliyon Ki Bari and the market.
Day 1, the Old City and the show. Jagdish Temple early, then City Palace from when it opens at 9 am. I didn't want to hurry it and it took me about four hours; the glass-work in Mor Chowk and sitting by a window over the lake were among my favourite moments. Rest after lunch. Sort out the Dharohar ticket earlier than I did. I bought mine at Bagore Ki Haveli at about 4 pm (the counter opens by 4 pm), and I'd rather have it done beforehand than worry about the line and a seat. The show has its own booking form too. Sit at Gangaur Ghat until it's time, and be in the queue well before the 7 pm show. More on the show: the Dharohar show at Bagore Ki Haveli.
Day 2, the lake. Take HRH's boat from Rameshwar Ghat at City Palace to Jagmandir: the regular boat runs 10 am to 2 pm in winter and the sunset boat until 5 pm, and mine left at about 4 pm. Then Fateh Sagar, slowly. This is my advice for planning both days:
Don't make a plan that grabs the next spot every two hours. You need time in between for lunch, a rest in your room, and just sitting.
Saheliyon Ki Bari is lovely, but with only two days I'd put the Palace, the ghats and the boat before it.
Udaipur itinerary 3 days: the order I'd use
For 3 days in Udaipur: day one in the Old City (Jagdish Temple, City Palace, Gangaur Ghat, the Dharohar show); day two the boat to Jagmandir and Fateh Sagar, unhurried; day three Badi Lake in the morning and Sajjangarh in the afternoon, by car with a driver. These are my picks from my November 2025 trip, without the arrival day, and I'd keep the rests that made my days work.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1, on foot | Jagdish Temple; City Palace from 9 am, about four hours | Lunch, a rest; the Dharohar ticket arranged earlier | Gangaur Ghat; the Dharohar show, 7 to 8 pm |
| Day 2, unhurried | A slow start; the regular boat to Jagmandir if you want it early (10 am to 2 pm) | Lunch, a rest, time to sit; or the sunset boat from Rameshwar Ghat (until 5 pm) | Fateh Sagar at dusk, taken slowly |
| Day 3, by car | Badi Lake and the short walk above it, in daylight | Lunch, a rest; Sajjangarh, down before sunset | Dal baati dinner |
The car day works best arranged beforehand: I agreed the pickup, where we were going and the way back to the hotel with my driver before we set off, so there was no hunting for a ride at each stop. The Biological Park, the zoo at the foot of the hill, is closed on Tuesdays, by Incredible India. Private pages dated 2026 list the palace and sanctuary road as open daily, about 8 or 9 am to 6 pm, last entry about 5:30 pm; we found no official palace timetable, so check at the gate.
With a spare morning, add Saheliyon Ki Bari, which I thought lovely, after the Palace, the ghats and the boat. What I'd drop first is extra shopping and a second visit to the same lake. For a fourth day, the extra time goes into rest, as it did for me, or into one of the day trips other guides suggest: Kumbhalgarh, Chittorgarh, Ranakpur, Nathdwara or Eklingji. I didn't go to any of them, and we haven't researched them for this page.
My 5 days (4 nights) in Udaipur, day by day
My Udaipur solo trip was four nights, Monday to Friday, after the overnight bus from Delhi on the Sunday. The first day was slow, the second was the Old City, the third a garden, the market and the lake, the fourth Badi Lake and Sajjangarh, and on the fifth morning I left for the airport. The map shows where each day went.
Sunday 9 November: the overnight bus
Nav and I had argued the day before. He didn't like me taking an overnight bus on my own and wanted me to go later; I'd already worked out the route and the stay, and I'd wanted this trip for a long time. So I packed on Sunday and left without telling him when. I sent a trusted friend the bus, the stay and the return plan. In the afternoon I took a cab from Greater Noida to Delhi, checked against the booking first (how I handled rides is under after dark). At the boarding point Nav messaged to ask where I was. I wrote back that I was fine, still angry, and would talk the next day; he replied that the anger could wait and I should look after myself.
The bus was an R S Yadav AC sleeper from near RK Ashram Metro, Gate 4. It stopped once in the night for the washroom and tea, and I ate something light and went back to my berth. A sleeper berth isn't a bed, and the night came in pieces. The bus itself, and the other ways from Delhi: Delhi to Udaipur.
Monday 10 November: arriving, and Fateh Sagar
I got down towards Reti Stand at about 10 am, wanting only to put my luggage down and freshen up, and a ride I'd arranged took me to the hostel. The car couldn't get to the door in the Old City lanes, so I walked the last bit with my suitcase, small shops on one side and scooters coming the other way. The hostel's staff helped with the bags. Looking at photos of a lovely Old City hotel and reaching it with a suitcase, I learned, are two different experiences.

The room wasn't ready until about 2 pm, which I'd expected, so I left my bags, had brunch and tea and sat down. Then I called Nav. I told him I was in Udaipur, that I'd taken the bus the night before, and that leaving without telling him wasn't right. He said sorry for his tone, that it was only my journey he'd worried about, and asked me to send the address and my return details. We'd made up on that first call, and after that we spoke every day.
After a nap I went to Fateh Sagar for the evening and didn't plan to stay long. There were people along the water, some talking, some taking photos; I stopped by the railing, bought a cold coffee and drank it slowly. I'd looked up the ride back beforehand and took a ride (the checks are under after dark). That night the news of the blast near the Red Fort in Delhi came in, and I called home first. It's why I kept extra time for the airport on Friday.

Tuesday 11 November: Jagdish Temple, City Palace and the Dharohar show
Poha and tea for breakfast, then a walk through the Old City to Jagdish Temple, stepping aside whenever a vehicle came past. I took the temple steps slowly and left my shoes at the top; the step count, hours and entry are in the tickets table.
I went into City Palace at about 9 am and came out at about 1 pm. The glass peacocks in Mor Chowk were so finely detailed up close that I didn't want to move on, and Kanch Ki Burj's red, yellow and white work was beautiful too. My favourite moment, and where I stopped longest, was at a window over the lake: I stood looking out and forgot about photos for a while, then asked another visitor to take one of me. The full visit, tickets and add-ons: City Palace in Udaipur.

After lunch I rested in my room, then went to Bagore Ki Haveli at about 4 pm and bought my show ticket there, so I wouldn't spend the evening wondering about seats. I sat at Gangaur Ghat until the light went, had tea near the haveli and stayed close rather than wander down a quiet stretch. Before the show people were already standing in line, and I queued with my bag in front of me. I got a seat at the side, where a head sometimes came between me and the stage. I loved it anyway: in the Bhavai the pots kept going higher and I couldn't take my eyes off the dancer. Next time I'd sort the ticket out earlier.
The show ran from 7 to a little after 8. Afterwards I stopped to talk to Nav, then walked back to Moustache by the Jagdish Chowk side, lit and full of people, and was in my room by about 8:30 (more under after dark). That night all I could think of was the Bhavai, and I kept telling Nav about it on the phone.
Wednesday 12 November: Saheliyon Ki Bari, Hathi Pol and the boat to Jagmandir
I was at Saheliyon Ki Bari at about 9 am and walked slowly in the shaded parts, not long and not rushed. For the ride on to Hathi Pol, I turned down the first driver, who wasn't clear about the pickup point or the full fare, and took a second ride, and I can't say whether it was an auto or a car (more under after dark). At the market I asked prices, took one printed scarf that fitted my shopping budget and left what didn't. I'd planned to be back by noon, and after lunch I rested.
The boat was from Rameshwar Ghat. There was a queue at the counter, and I asked about the return from Jagmandir before my turn came. I boarded at about 4 pm; it was a shared boat, I put the life jacket on properly, and seeing the city from the water felt completely different. At Jagmandir I walked around at my own pace. Because I'd understood the return instructions first, I didn't keep checking the time. By HRH's winter timetable a 4 pm departure is the sunset boat; for the fares and which boats land at Jagmandir, see the Lake Pichola boat ride.

Dinner was the trip's proper Rajasthani meal, at Krishna Dal Baati, an unlimited thali for Rs 350: dal, baati with ghee on it, churma, gatte ki sabzi, papad and chaas. The baati had ghee on it, so I ate slowly, and I was full quickly. That night I confirmed the next day's car and pickup rather than count on finding a ride in the morning.
Thursday 13 November: Badi Lake, Sajjangarh and Fateh Sagar again
Breakfast at about 7:30, then a car with a driver to Badi Lake. The sedan and driver for the day cost Rs 2,800 and took me to Badi, Bahubali and Sajjangarh. I'd agreed the pickup, where we were going and the way back to the hotel with him beforehand, so I didn't have to hunt for a new ride at each stop. I asked him which way led up Bahubali Hills. The climb wasn't long, but the ground was uneven and stony and I had to watch my feet, stopping now and then for breath and for the view. From the top there was an open view over Badi Lake and the hills around it, and I stayed a while to take photos, a few steps back from the edge. If the trail had been empty or the way back unclear, I'd have stayed by the lake. The walk itself: places to visit in Udaipur.
I was back for lunch before midday and rested. In the afternoon I went up to Sajjangarh by car: there was an entry ticket at the gate and a charge for the car (for budgeting I'd keep about Rs 175 and Rs 340, kept separate, as planning estimates, not what I paid), then bend after bend, with the view opening below the window. What I liked was the hills and lakes from outside; the interior didn't take me long. I came down before sunset rather than wait up there for it, to keep to the gate's rules and keep the way back simple, and stopped at Fateh Sagar on the way back for the last light. More on both: Sajjangarh, the Monsoon Palace and Fateh Sagar Lake.

Friday 14 November: home
Poha and a small kachori with my tea, a short walk round the lanes I now knew without the map, then checkout. I left for the airport at about 11 am with plenty of time and flew to Delhi. A CNG cab took me to Greater Noida, and I messaged home from the road. When Nav opened the door, I had the whole trip to tell him.

There were moments of loneliness, a view I wanted to show someone straight away, a dinner with an empty chair, and there were times I was comfortable with my plate and my own time.
All day I went around as I pleased, and in the evening I called Nav and told him everything.
Tickets and hours for the stops on my route
City Palace charges everyone the same Rs 400 an adult (museum FAQ, October 2023); the Dharohar show charges foreign visitors double, and undated guides say Saheliyon Ki Bari and Sajjangarh charge them more too. Every figure below is as published, with the date we read it; four of them, the City Palace 2026 price, the boat, Saheliyon's fee and Sajjangarh, aren't settled for 2026. Where I paid in November 2025, my price is in the ticket column.
| Stop | Ticket | Hours and access | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| City Palace museum | Rs 400 an adult, one fee for Indian and foreign visitors; Rs 150 ages 5 to 18 and students, Rs 250 over 60, free under 5 | 9 am to 9 pm every day, tickets until 8 pm; a lift, a ramp and wheelchairs listed | The museum's FAQ, last updated 4 October 2023; the 2026 e-ticket page hides prices behind a location prompt |
| Jagdish Temple | Free | Early morning to 1 pm and about 5 to 8 pm in the listings, no official timetable; 32 steps to the main entrance, a back way with fewer | Listings; a visitor's review of March 2026 gives the 32 steps |
| Dharohar show, Bagore Ki Haveli | Rs 125 Indian, Rs 250 foreign, Rs 75 ages 5 to 10; online, plus Rs 10 and 5%; I paid Rs 125 at the haveli in November 2025 | 7 to 8 pm; the counter opens by 4 pm; first floor, no lift; seats aren't numbered | The show's booking form and terms |
| HRH boat to Jagmandir, from Rameshwar Ghat | Regular Rs 600 an adult (Rs 300 a child); sunset Rs 800 (Rs 450); I went at about 4 pm in November 2025, which fits the sunset rate | Winter: regular 10 am to 2 pm, sunset until 5 pm | HRH's table, valid 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, now expired; none published by October 2026 |
| Saheliyon Ki Bari | About Rs 10 to 30 for Indians, Rs 50 to 100 for foreigners | 9 am to 7 pm | Hours: Incredible India (Ministry of Tourism); fees: undated guides |
| Sajjangarh | For budgeting I'd keep about Rs 175 for entry and about Rs 340 for the car, separately: planning estimates, not what I paid. No official 2026 rate is published. Undated guides give Rs 30 to 165 for Indians, Rs 300 to 550 for foreigners, plus a vehicle fee. For entry, private pages dated 2026 list about Rs 110 to 120 for Indians and about Rs 450 to 500 for foreigners: udaipurtourism.co.in, April 2026; Travel Coffee, July 2026; my Rs 175 planning figure is higher. For a car at the gate, private pages dated 2026 list about Rs 300 to 340 for a car: Rs 338, udaipurtourism.co.in, April 2026; about Rs 300+, Travel Coffee, July 2026; no official schedule found | The Biological Park (the zoo at the foot of the hill) is closed on Tuesdays; private pages dated 2026 list the palace and sanctuary road as open daily, about 8 or 9 am to 6 pm, last entry about 5:30 pm; no official palace timetable found, so check at the gate | Park: Incredible India (Ministry of Tourism); palace hours and fees: private pages (udaipurtourism.co.in, April 2026; Travel Coffee, July 2026); no official fee or timetable found |
Where to stay in Udaipur, and hostels
Stay in the Old City, near Jagdish Chowk or Lal Ghat, to walk to City Palace, Jagdish Temple, Gangaur Ghat and the Dharohar show. Just ask before you book whether a car can reach the door. I stayed four nights at Moustache Udaipur, a hostel in Gadiya Devra near Jagdish Chowk, in a private AC room, not a dorm. I paid for all four nights myself: Rs 11,328, with no discount, and the stay wasn't hosted. I liked the hostel's location, but I wanted my own room and bathroom, a door to close at the end of the day. Being near the Old City mattered more to me than paying extra for a lake view every morning.
After a day of walking, having a room of my own felt good: shoes off, sit comfortably on the bed and call Nav.
The private room was the best part. It's an old building, and the noise of the lane sometimes reached the room at night; I hadn't expected a silent hotel, but I had to adjust a little to sleep. I looked at the bathroom and made sure of the hot water as soon as I moved in, and I used my phone's data for calls. Before booking again I'd look harder at the private room's condition and at how you reach the hostel with luggage.
What rooms cost, as we sampled them on Booking.com on 20 October 2026 for 19 November and 31 December 2026, is below. The ranges include the tax line the site added, and deals the site was running that day.
| Kind of room | 19 November 2026 | 31 December 2026 | Places in the sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| A dorm bed, one person | Rs 443 to 849 | Rs 797 to 1,884 | Madpackers, Moustache, Zostel, goSTOPS, The Hosteller |
| A private room for one | Rs 1,545 to 3,330 | Rs 3,356 to 7,919 | Moustache, Shalom Backpackers, Hotel The Tiger |
| A budget double | Rs 1,545 to 2,930 | Rs 3,356 to 6,969 | Moustache, Shalom Backpackers, Barefoot, Hotel The Tiger |
| A mid-range room on or near Lake Pichola | Rs 2,661 to 4,186 | Rs 4,429 to 5,900 | Footprint By The Lake, Kotra Haveli, Devraj Niwas, Udai Niwas |
| A family of four, one room or two | Rs 3,534 to 6,088 | Rs 6,431 to 8,878 | The Uddhav Elite's quadruple room; two doubles at Uddhav Vilas or Hotel The Tiger; a triple at Tripli Le Shelton on 31 December |
| A family of four, mid-range | Rs 5,292 to 8,371 | Rs 7,053 to 13,375 | Udai Niwas's suite, Opulence Inn's family suite, two mid-range rooms |
At the top of what we sampled, a room was about Rs 5,000 to 6,000 a night before tax for 19 November, at Perfectstayz, Amar Kothi, Kaner Bagh and Tripli Regalia. For 31 December it was Rs 6,960 to 11,880 at Sterling Balicha, Grandrosse, Perfectstayz and My Downtown. On some dearer rooms the tax line was about 20 per cent rather than about 5, so check the total, not the headline price. For one person, Booking.com priced the same room the same for one adult as for two at five of the eight hotels we set out to compare; the other three moved both ways with that day's deals. For a family, a single room that sleeps four was cheaper than two doubles at two of the four hotels where we could compare, and some listings said one child stays free; the extra-bed charge wasn't shown.
Hostels in Udaipur: Booking.com listed 40 hostels for 19 November 2026. A bed in a mixed dorm of six to ten was about Rs 420 to 800 a night before tax, and Moustache's six-bed dorm was about Rs 500. For 31 December the beds we could compare were about 1.7 to 2.2 times as much. Women-only dorms were on sale for New Year's Eve at 3 Raahi and goSTOPS. I stayed in Moustache's private room, not its dorm, and haven't stayed at the others.
Old City or Fateh Sagar: the Old City is the one base you can walk from to half this itinerary, which is why I chose it. Fateh Sagar is about 3 km north, quieter by its own lake but a ride from Jagdish Temple; Booking.com showed us only one place named for it, so we have no price range to give. In the Old City a car can't reach many hotels; an undated guest review of Moustache Udaipur Luxuria says you switch to a scooter or an auto, and mine was the same story on foot. Hotels log every guest on the police's e-Visitor portal with an ID, by a police order of 11 April 2026, and won't give a room to a minor without a guardian's permission; carry your ID.
Getting to Udaipur and around: bus, train, flight, autos and cabs
From Delhi, take an overnight sleeper bus or train, or fly in about 1 hour 20 minutes; in Udaipur, walk the Old City and use autos or a car with driver for the rest. These are the prices we saw on 20 October 2026 for one adult, one way, on 19 November and 31 December 2026.
| How | Times | 19 November 2026 | 31 December 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overnight bus (redBus) | Mostly 17:30 to 22:30 from Delhi, 06:00 to 10:25 in Udaipur, about 12 to 13.5 hours; R S Yadav 19:15 to 08:20 | Rs 849 to 4,500 on the first ten buses; R S Yadav Rs 1,999 | Rs 849 to 3,599; on the cards we could match, only FlixBus rose, by about 44 to 49 per cent |
| Chetak Express, 20473 | 19:40 Delhi Sarai Rohilla, 07:48 Udaipur City | Sleeper Rs 425, AC three-tier Rs 1,085, AC two-tier Rs 1,520; a waitlist when we looked | not looked at |
| Mewar Express, 12963 | 18:25 Hazrat Nizamuddin, 07:30 Udaipur City | Sleeper Rs 455, AC three-tier Rs 1,165, AC two-tier Rs 1,625; RAC or a waitlist when we looked | not looked at |
| Flight, Delhi to Udaipur (Google Flights) | About 1 h 20 min nonstop; Air India nonstops, Air India Express also listed | From Rs 7,902 (06:30); other nonstops about Rs 12,750 to 14,630 | Rs 6,353 on three Air India nonstops |
One look per date, a month to ten weeks ahead, isn't a seasonal rule: the New Year flight came out cheaper than the November one on the day we looked. From Mumbai the cheapest flight was Rs 9,461 for 19 November and Rs 8,437 for 31 December. From Gujarat, a Vande Bharat train has run from Surat to Udaipur since October 2026, 06:10 to 13:40, every day except Tuesday.
Where the bus drops you. Mine let me off towards Reti Stand at about 10 am on 10 November, about 5 km from Jagdish Temple by road. One booking site lists four drops for Delhi buses: Amberi Puliya on the bypass, Bhuvana Circle, opposite Ananta Medical College and near Reti Stand Circle. Ask yours which it uses, and have your ride sorted before you get down; it's my first tip under after dark.
From the station or the airport. Udaipur City station is about 3.7 km from Jagdish Temple, the airport about 25 km. The Airports Authority of India lists a pre-paid taxi counter, an Uber kiosk and a city bus at the airport, but prints no fares. Undated listings we read in October 2026 put a taxi to the city at about Rs 500 to 900. There's no prepaid auto booth at the station or the Udiapole bus stand, Udaipur Times reported in November 2025. Nor did we find a published auto fare, October 2026 (the district tourism committee only discussed one in June 2026), so agree the fare before you sit.
In town. I walked the Old City. For other rides I took local rides and had the hotel arrange one when I needed it. For Badi Lake and Sajjangarh I hired a sedan with a driver, Rs 2,800 for the day in November 2025. Stopping at my own pace and having the way back fixed suited me better than finding a ride at each stop. Uber lists Udaipur, with rides you can book up to 30 days ahead. One online operator's rate card, undated but read in October 2026, gives Rs 2,799 for a sedan with driver for 8 hours or 80 km and Rs 3,899 for an SUV. Half a day is Rs 1,699 to 2,399, with toll and parking extra. Travellers paid about Rs 800 to 1,200 for an auto for a whole day in 2022 and 2023. A scooter was about Rs 449 a day plus fuel from one rental firm in October 2026, and needs a valid driving licence.
Udaipur after dark, as a woman on my own
I had no bad incident in five days alone in Udaipur, and I kept my evenings simple. I kept to busy, lit routes, took no shortcuts through quiet lanes and came back at night by a route I knew, and somebody at home always knew where I was. After the Dharohar show I walked back to Moustache by the Jagdish Chowk side, which was lit and full of people, and was in my room by about 8:30. On my first evening Fateh Sagar had people along the water; there, and on my last evening, I kept the outing short. Before going out each evening I worked out how I'd get back, and after the show I knew where a car could pick me up if the way felt too quiet.
Rides. Leaving Fateh Sagar I took a ride and matched its number and the pickup point before I got in, and messaged Nav that I'd left. The one I turned down was a street auto: the driver wouldn't say clearly where he'd pick me up or what the full fare was, and I kept having to ask what I'd end up paying. I dropped it there and took a second ride, and I can't say whether it was an auto or a car. It felt a little awkward then, but afterwards I thought I'd done right.
You don't have to say yes just because you hesitate to say no.
I'd give a woman going alone for the first time three tips. Sort out the hotel and the pickup before you go, because arranging them with luggage after a night on a bus is exhausting. Send someone at home your route and ride details; talking to Nav each evening also made the day feel lighter. And take your own comfort seriously: if a ride, a road or a conversation doesn't feel right, change it. You don't need to go to the edge of a hill for a good photo. I also matched the Delhi cabs' number plates and drivers against the booking. I went to Badi only in daylight, with a driver whose waiting point I'd fixed, and came down from Sajjangarh before sunset.
Numbers to save. 112 is India's emergency number. 1363 (or 1800 111 363) is the national tourist helpline, round the clock, in Hindi, English and ten other languages. Rajasthan Police named 1090 as its women's helpline in a 2024 campaign. Patrika reported in July 2026 that Udaipur Police were starting a WhatsApp tourist helpline on 7300059984, with women's safety in its emergency menu; we couldn't find the number on a police page. Zee News reported in May 2025 that a team of 20 women police officers on bikes patrols near schools, markets and crowded places. And 25 tourist patrol vehicles were flagged off near Fateh Sagar on 4 February 2026.
The case to know about. In June 2025 a French woman reported being raped after a party at a cafe outside the Old City; Udaipur Police arrested the accused within 36 hours, Patrika reported on 26 June 2025. One case isn't a rate, but our advice follows from it: don't leave a party, or accept a lift, with someone you've only just met.
With children. City Palace charges Rs 150 for ages 5 to 18 and nothing under 5, and lists a childcare room. The Dharohar show is Rs 75 for ages 5 to 10. HRH's boat was Rs 300 to 450 a child on its last published fares. Life jackets are handed out on the Jagmandir boat, as I found. A seat at the side of the Dharohar courtyard can be blocked by heads, so get there early with small children. Our calculator charges children the adult ticket, so a family's real ticket line comes out lower.
With older parents. Jagdish Temple has 32 steps and a back way with fewer. City Palace lists a lift, a ramp, wheelchairs and an accessible toilet, though not which floors the lift reaches, and charges Rs 250 over 60. The Dharohar show is on the first floor with no lift. Badi's walk is on loose stone, so a parent can enjoy the lake from the bottom, and Sajjangarh is a drive to the top. Above all, choose a stay a car can reach; the walk I did with a suitcase is harder with a parent.
Food in Udaipur: vegetarian meals and Jain advice
I'm vegetarian and had no trouble eating in Udaipur, and I didn't eat every meal in a fancy restaurant. Mornings were poha and chai, with a kachori in between, and a cold coffee near Fateh Sagar. My one proper Rajasthani meal was at Krishna Dal Baati, where an unlimited thali cost me Rs 350 in November 2025: dal, baati with ghee on it, churma, gatte ki sabzi, papad and chaas. The baati had ghee on it, so I ate slowly, and I filled up fast.
If you eat Jain food, say what you need before you order, and ask directly about onion, garlic and the root vegetables you avoid; don't assume it from a "veg" menu. I wasn't eating Jain meals, so I don't recommend my thali as a Jain option. The listings we read in October 2026 showed pure vegetarian places but none that said Jain (see what we couldn't verify).
Udaipur trip cost: solo, a couple or a family
For four nights in mid-November 2026, two people in a budget room should plan for about Rs 17,500 to 37,000 (about $185 to 390), and about Rs 25,000 to 53,000 at New Year rates. For the same four nights, a solo traveller in a private room comes to about Rs 13,500 to 29,000, or Rs 9,000 to 18,500 in a dorm. A family of four with a car comes to about Rs 40,000 to 77,000, and Rs 51,000 to 89,000 at New Year. Dollars are at Rs 95.2492 to the dollar, the RBI reference rate of 30 October 2026. None of it includes getting to Udaipur.
These are our estimates from prices we sampled and published fares, read on 20 October 2026; they aren't what I spent. Each range runs from every line at its lowest to every line at its highest. Every total has the stay, two rides in and out, getting around on the days between, and three meals a day. It has five tickets too: City Palace, the Dharohar show, the boat to Jagmandir, Saheliyon Ki Bari and Sajjangarh.

| Two of you, 4 nights, autos | Rs 17,500 to 37,000 (about $185 to 390) | Rs 25,000 to 53,000 * see note under the table | Rs 22,000 to 42,000 | Rs 29,000 to 49,000 |
| Family of four, 2 nights, a car with driver | Rs 22,000 to 45,000 (about $230 to 470) | Rs 28,000 to 50,000 | Rs 26,000 to 49,000 | Rs 29,000 to 59,000 |

* For two people over four nights, the budget New Year figure runs above the comfort one: a budget double on 31 December can cost more than a mid-range room (Shalom Backpackers' double was Rs 6,593 a night before tax, against Rs 5,582 at the top of the mid-range rooms we sampled), as explained below.
What the rooms are: for one person, a dorm bed (budget) or a private room priced for one (comfort). For two, a budget double or a mid-range room on or near Lake Pichola. For a family, one room for four or two doubles, or the mid-range version of either. The New Year columns price every night at the 31 December 2026 price, not a week's average; on the same room, 31 December cost about 1.3 to 3.3 times the 19 November price. On 31 December a budget double can cost more than a mid-range room. Shalom Backpackers' double was Rs 6,593 a night before tax, against Rs 5,582 at the top of the mid-range rooms we sampled. That's why a couple's budget New Year column can run above the comfort one.
What the other lines are: two rides in and out at about Rs 500 to 900 each, or Rs 500 to 1,300 for a family's car. On each day between arrival and departure, an auto for the day at Rs 800 to 1,200, or a car with driver at Rs 2,799 to 3,899. Food is Rs 600 to 1,610 a person a day. The low end is three meals at a thali place; the high end is a breakfast, a thali lunch and a dinner at a lakeside restaurant (Zomato's cost for two, read 20 October 2026, and thali prices of March 2022). The five tickets are at the adult price, or the foreign visitors' price where you choose it. The Sajjangarh vehicle fee, cameras, shopping and tips are left out (for the vehicle fee, private pages dated 2026 list about Rs 300 to 340 for a car: Rs 338, udaipurtourism.co.in, April 2026; about Rs 300+, Travel Coffee, July 2026; no official schedule found).
Plan for aboutRs 17,500 to 37,000about $185 to 390, €160 to 350
For 2 people, 4 nights, mid-November 2026, at the room prices we sampled for 19 November. Not included: getting to Udaipur (tick it under Things to do), shopping, the Sajjangarh vehicle fee (private pages dated 2026 list about Rs 300 to 340 for a car, no official schedule found), camera fees, tips and alcohol.
| Item | What it covers | Rs |

| Airport and back | two taxi rides, in and out (airport, Reti Stand or the station) | 1,000 to 1,800 |
| Getting around | 3 days, an auto for the day, up to three people | 2,400 to 3,600 |
| Food | 2 people, 5 days, three meals a day, a thali place to a lakeside dinner | 6,000 to 16,100 |
| City Palace museum | 2 tickets | 800 |
| Dharohar show, Bagore Ki Haveli | 2 tickets | 262 to 282 |
| Lake Pichola boat to Jagmandir (HRH) | 2 tickets | 1,200 to 1,600 |

| Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) | 2 tickets | 60 to 330 |
Dollar, pound and euro figures use the RBI reference rate of 30 October 2026. Every line's source and date are in the list above the calculator.
To add the trip from Delhi, tick it in the calculator. A return by sleeper bus was Rs 1,698 to 9,000 a person, by train Rs 850 to 3,250 and by air Rs 15,804 to 29,254 (Rs 12,706 to 29,362 for 31 December), all twice the one-way fares above. What I actually paid is in the next table.
What I paid (November 2025)
These are six payments I gave Nav, in rupees, for my trip of November 2025. The last column is the nearest figure on this page from our 2026 research.
| Payment | What I paid | Nearest 2026 figure on this page |
|---|---|---|
| Moustache Udaipur, four nights, private AC room | Rs 11,328 | Rs 1,545 to 3,330 a night for a private room priced for one, 19 November 2026; Moustache's own room in our sample was Rs 1,471 a night before tax |
| R S Yadav AC sleeper bus, Delhi to Udaipur | Rs 798 | R S Yadav Rs 1,999 for 19 November 2026; the ten buses we saw on redBus, Rs 849 to 4,500 |
| IndiGo flight, Udaipur to Delhi, 14 November | Rs 6,061 | Delhi to Udaipur, the other way: from Rs 7,902 for 19 November 2026 |
| Dharohar show, Bagore Ki Haveli | Rs 125 | Rs 125 an Indian adult on the booking form, October 2026 |
| Sedan with a driver for Badi, Bahubali and Sajjangarh | Rs 2,800 | Rs 2,799 for a sedan for 8 hours or 80 km on one operator's undated rate card |
| Krishna Dal Baati, unlimited thali | Rs 350 | Zomato: about Rs 800 for two |
| Total of these six payments | Rs 21,462 | Not a trip total (below) |
That total covers only the six payments. It leaves out the City Palace, boat and Sajjangarh tickets, my local rides (including the rides the hotel arranged), my other meals and small spends, which I didn't list. We haven't estimated them as mine, so Rs 21,462 isn't what the whole trip cost me. Bus and flight were Rs 6,859 of it.
Where my figure and the 2026 one differ, both stand. The City Palace ticket rate was Rs 400, the same as the FAQ's. For the boat, HRH lists Rs 600 for the regular ride and Rs 800 for the sunset one; I went at about 4 pm, which fits the sunset rate, but I can't say what I paid. For Sajjangarh I'd budget about Rs 175 for entry and about Rs 340 for the car, separately; the Rs 175 is above the Rs 110 to 120 for Indians that private pages dated 2026 list, and both are planning estimates. The bus was Rs 798, below the Rs 849 low end we saw for 2026. My room, Rs 2,832 a night, is inside our mid-November 2026 range for a private room priced for one, but above Moustache's Rs 1,471 a night in our sample. The two are a year apart, so plan from the 2026 sample and read mine as one dated price.
When to go to Udaipur, in brief
November to February are Udaipur's cool months, and I went in mid-November; the dearest nights are Diwali and the week around New Year. The India Meteorological Department's averages for 1991 to 2020 at the airport station, Dabok, run from 13.0 to 29.8 °C in November. January, the coolest month, runs from 7.6 to 24.5 °C, and November has 5.2 mm of rain. Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026. On our sampling the Diwali weekend was dearer than New Year at some hotels and cheaper at others. It's the wedding season too: one visitor found parts of City Palace shut on 25 November 2025, after a wedding. Month by month, the weather and the lake are on the best time to visit Udaipur.
| What people say | What the evidence says | What holds up |
|---|---|---|
| "Two days is enough for Udaipur" | Counting day trips, six of 13 itinerary pages plan two days and six plan three; our two-day plan fits the Old City, the show, the boat and Fateh Sagar but drops Badi Lake, Sajjangarh, Saheliyon Ki Bari and the market | Enough if you choose and don't hurry; three is easier |
| "The Monsoon Palace is free" | For budgeting I'd keep about Rs 175 for the Sajjangarh entry ticket and about Rs 340 for the car, separately, as planning estimates, not what I paid; we found no official 2026 fee (October 2026); for the car, private pages dated 2026 list about Rs 300 to 340 for a car: Rs 338, udaipurtourism.co.in, April 2026; about Rs 300+, Travel Coffee, July 2026; no official schedule found | Not free |
| "City Palace costs Rs 300 for foreigners" | One travel blog gives Rs 300 a foreign tourist; the museum's own FAQ charges one fee, Rs 400, to Indian and foreign visitors | One fee, Rs 400, for everyone |
| "Every Pichola boat goes to Jagmandir" | HRH's boats from Rameshwar Ghat land there; reports disagree on whether the cheaper municipal boats let you off, and we found no municipal fare (October 2026) | Not every boat; ask |
| "The lakes are dry in summer" | The lakes ran dry in drought years such as 2005 and 2009; we found no rule that the boats stop every summer | Only in a drought |
| "Autos overcharge" | We found no published auto fare (October 2026), and there's no prepaid booth at the station or the Udiapole bus stand (November 2025) | No fare to check against; agree it first |
| "It's safe for women on their own" | My five days alone in November 2025 passed with no bad incident; one case against a foreign woman in June 2025 followed a party outside the Old City | My experience, not a statistic |
Coming from abroad: the visa, flights, paying and the C-Form
The visa. Citizens of the 174 countries and territories on the portal's list on 20 October 2026 can apply for India's e-Tourist visa, at least four days before arrival. The official fee table, dated 8 September 2026, is country by country, plus a 3 per cent bank charge:
| Visa | Most countries | United Kingdom | United States |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 days, April to June | US$10 | US$10 | US$10 |
| 30 days, July to March | US$25 | US$25 | US$25 |
| 1 year | US$40 | US$40 | US$40 |
| 5 years | US$200 | US$484 | US$160 |
Some countries pay other amounts or nothing (Japan, Russia and several in South-East Asia among them). The one-year and five-year visas allow at most 180 days in India in a calendar year.
Flights. From abroad you connect through another Indian airport; the flights we priced were from Delhi and Mumbai, under getting there.
Paying. City Palace charges one fee, Rs 400 (museum FAQ, October 2023), whoever you are, so an OCI card changes nothing there; the Dharohar show is Rs 250 for a foreign adult. UPI One World, the wallet for visitors, was a pilot for delegates at a February 2026 summit, and we found no confirmation that tourists can use it, so carry a card and some cash.
The C-Form. Whoever puts up a foreign guest, a hotel, hostel or homestay, has to submit a Form C for you, OCI cardholders included, the Bureau of Immigration's page says; the 24-hour deadline, from your arrival, isn't on that page. It's in Rule 17 of the Immigration and Foreigners Rules 2025, as a Goa government notice of December 2025 and a Dimapur police notice of February 2026 put it. The host files it, so carry your passport. The tourist helpline, 1363, works in twelve languages, including French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.
Rupee prices on this page are the local ones; dollar figures use Rs 95.2492 to the dollar, the RBI reference rate of 30 October 2026.
Udaipur itinerary: FAQ
How many days are enough for Udaipur?
Three full days are enough to see Udaipur's main sights without rushing: the Old City and City Palace, the Dharohar show, a boat on Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar, and Badi Lake and Sajjangarh by car. Two days work if you give the Old City and the show one day and the boat and Fateh Sagar the other, and don't plan a new stop every two hours. I had four nights and five days in November 2025, arriving by overnight bus and leaving for the airport on the fifth morning, and that left time to rest most afternoons.
What is a good 2-day Udaipur itinerary?
For two days in Udaipur I'd keep City Palace, Jagdish Temple, Gangaur Ghat, the Dharohar folk show at Bagore Ki Haveli and the Lake Pichola boat. On day one, the Old City and the show: Jagdish Temple in the morning, City Palace for about four hours, a rest, Gangaur Ghat and the 7 pm show. On day two, the boat from Rameshwar Ghat to Jagmandir and Fateh Sagar, taken slowly, with time for lunch, a rest and just sitting. Book the show ticket earlier than I did. Saheliyon Ki Bari is lovely, but with only two days I'd put the Palace, the ghats and the boat first. The two days are our layout of my picks from five days, not a trip I did in two.
What is a good 3-day Udaipur itinerary?
For three days in Udaipur: day one in the Old City (Jagdish Temple, City Palace, Gangaur Ghat, the Dharohar show); day two the boat to Jagmandir and Fateh Sagar, unhurried; day three Badi Lake in the morning and Sajjangarh in the afternoon, by car with a driver. The Biological Park at the foot of Sajjangarh's hill closes at 5 pm in winter and on Tuesdays; private pages dated 2026 list the palace road as open daily, though we found no official timetable. With a spare morning I'd add Saheliyon Ki Bari; extra shopping and a second visit to the same lake are what I'd drop first. These are my picks from my November 2025 trip, without my arrival day.
How much does a 3-day Udaipur trip cost?
A 3-day trip is 2 or 3 nights; three nights in Udaipur cost about Rs 14,000 to 29,000 for two people (about $145 to 300) on our estimate for mid-November 2026, with a budget room, autos, food and the main tickets, and about Rs 10,500 to 23,000 solo in a private room or Rs 31,000 to 61,000 for a family of four with a car. That's built from prices we sampled in October 2026, not what I spent, and it leaves out getting to Udaipur. At New Year the rooms cost about 1.3 to 3.3 times as much.
How much did your Udaipur trip cost you?
Six payments of mine from November 2025 come to Rs 21,462: Rs 11,328 for four nights in a private AC room, Rs 798 for the sleeper bus, Rs 6,061 for the flight home, Rs 125 for the Dharohar show, Rs 2,800 for a sedan with a driver to Badi, Bahubali and Sajjangarh, and Rs 350 for an unlimited thali at Krishna Dal Baati. That leaves out the City Palace, boat and Sajjangarh tickets (I can't give what I paid for those without the tickets in front of me), my local rides, my other meals and small spends, so it isn't the whole trip; our calculator's ranges are from 2026 prices.
Is Udaipur safe for a woman travelling alone?
Udaipur was safe for me as a solo female traveller: I spent five days alone in Udaipur in November 2025 with no bad incident, though one trip isn't a statistic. I kept to busy, lit routes after dark (after the Bagore show I walked back by the Jagdish Chowk side, which was lit and full of people). I shared my route and ride details with a friend and with Nav, and matched the Delhi cabs' number plates against the booking. In Udaipur I took local rides (leaving Fateh Sagar I matched the number and pickup point before I got in, and messaged Nav), had the hotel arrange a ride when I needed one, and hired a car with a driver for Badi Lake and Sajjangarh, with the pickup, the stops and the way back agreed first. I turned down one ride whose driver wouldn't say where he'd pick me up or what the full fare was, and took a second one; you don't have to say yes just because refusing feels awkward. India's emergency number is 112, and the national tourist helpline is 1363, round the clock.
Where should I stay in Udaipur?
Stay in the Old City near Jagdish Chowk or Lal Ghat if you want to walk to City Palace, Jagdish Temple, Gangaur Ghat and Bagore Ki Haveli, as I did at Moustache Udaipur, where I paid Rs 11,328 myself for four nights in a private AC room in November 2025 (the stay wasn't hosted or discounted). Check first whether a car reaches the door: in the Old City lanes mine stopped short and I walked the last part with my suitcase. For older parents, a stay a car can reach matters more than the view.
How much is a hostel in Udaipur?
A dorm bed in an Udaipur hostel was about Rs 420 to 800 a night before tax for 19 November 2026, when we looked on 20 October 2026, and about Rs 760 to 1,780 for 31 December. A private room in a hostel or budget hotel was about Rs 1,470 to 2,770 for two, and I paid Rs 2,832 a night (Rs 11,328 for four nights) for a private AC room at Moustache in November 2025, a year earlier. Booking.com priced the room the same for one adult as for two at five of the eight hotels we set out to compare.
How long does City Palace take, and what does it cost?
City Palace took me about four hours in November 2025, from about 9 am to about 1 pm, and the museum ticket rate was Rs 400. The museum's own FAQ, last updated in October 2023, gives one fee for Indian and foreign visitors, Rs 400 an adult, Rs 150 for ages 5 to 18 and students, Rs 250 over 60, free under 5; it's open 9 am to 9 pm every day, with tickets on sale until 8 pm. The 2026 e-ticket page asks for your phone's location before it shows prices.
Is Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) free?
No, Sajjangarh isn't free: there is an entry ticket at the gate and a separate charge for the car. For budgeting I'd keep about Rs 175 for entry and about Rs 340 for the car, as separate planning estimates, not what I paid. We couldn't find an official fee for 2026, so these are estimates, not current rates. Undated guides give anything from Rs 30 to 165 a person for Indians and Rs 300 to 550 for foreigners, plus a vehicle fee (private pages dated 2026 list about Rs 300 to 340 for a car: Rs 338, udaipurtourism.co.in, April 2026; about Rs 300+, Travel Coffee, July 2026; no official schedule found), so my Rs 175 planning figure is a little above the guides' top figure for Indians. For entry, private pages dated 2026 list about Rs 110 to 120 for Indians and about Rs 450 to 500 for foreigners: udaipurtourism.co.in, April 2026; Travel Coffee, July 2026; my Rs 175 planning figure is higher.
How do I get from Delhi to Udaipur?
Delhi to Udaipur is an overnight sleeper bus, an overnight train or a flight of about 1 hour 20 minutes. For 19 November 2026, looked at on 20 October 2026, buses were Rs 849 to 4,500 and about 12 to 13.5 hours; the Chetak Express (19:40 from Delhi Sarai Rohilla, 07:48 at Udaipur City) was Rs 425 in sleeper and showed a waitlist when we looked; flights started at Rs 7,902. I took an R S Yadav AC sleeper from near RK Ashram Metro, Gate 4, and paid Rs 798 in November 2025; I flew back with IndiGo for Rs 6,061.
Does every Lake Pichola boat stop at Jagmandir?
No. The HRH boats from Rameshwar Ghat, at City Palace, land at Jagmandir; HRH's last published fares were Rs 600 an adult for the regular boat (10 am to 2 pm in winter) and Rs 800 for the sunset boat, valid to 31 March 2026. I went at about 4 pm in November 2025, which fits the sunset rate of Rs 800, but I can't say what I paid without the ticket. Cheaper municipal boats also run, but we found no published fare for them (October 2026), and reports disagree on whether they let you off at Jagmandir; ask before you buy.
Is Udaipur easy for vegetarians, and what about Jain food?
I'm vegetarian and had no trouble eating in Udaipur: poha and chai in the mornings, a kachori, a cold coffee near Fateh Sagar, and one proper Rajasthani meal, an unlimited thali for Rs 350 at Krishna Dal Baati in November 2025 (dal, baati with ghee, churma, gatte ki sabzi, papad and chaas). If you eat Jain food, say so before you order and ask directly about onion, garlic and root vegetables; don't assume it from a "veg" menu. I wasn't eating Jain meals, so I don't recommend my thali as a Jain option, and the listings we read in October 2026 named no Jain restaurant.
Do foreigners pay more at City Palace?
No. The City Palace museum charges one fee, Rs 400 an adult, to Indian and foreign visitors, by its own FAQ of October 2023. The Dharohar show at Bagore Ki Haveli does charge more: Rs 250 for a foreign adult against Rs 125 for an Indian, on its booking form read 20 October 2026.
What we couldn't verify
- City Palace's 2026 counter price and add-ons. The museum's e-ticket page needs your phone's location before it shows them, so the Rs 400 on this page is from its FAQ of October 2023. The ticket rate on my visit was Rs 400.
- HRH's boat fares for 2026-27. The last published table ran to 31 March 2026, and no newer one was on its site in October 2026. I went at about 4 pm in November 2025, which fits the sunset rate, but I can't say what I paid.
- Sajjangarh's fees, and who charges which. We found no official fee or timetable for the palace, the park or a vehicle. The fee figures in the table are from undated guides, apart from my planning figures of about Rs 175 for entry and about Rs 340 for the car, which are estimates, not 2026 rates or what I paid. Two private pages dated 2026 give about Rs 110 to 120 for Indians, about Rs 450 to 500 for foreigners and about Rs 300 to 340 for a car; they are not official either.
- Auto and airport taxi fares. We found no published auto fare (October 2026), and the airport's pre-paid counter prints none online.
- Jagdish Temple's hours. There's no official timetable; the hours here are the listings'.
- A Jain or no-onion, no-garlic restaurant in the Old City, and street-food prices. The restaurant listings we read in October 2026 showed pure vegetarian places but none that said Jain, and no stall prices; I wasn't eating Jain meals, so I can't say from my own trip.
- Whether the WhatsApp tourist helpline is the police's own number. Patrika reported it in July 2026; we found it on no police page.
- What I paid beyond six payments. My table lists six payments; my local rides, other meals and small spends aren't in it, so its total isn't the whole trip, and we haven't estimated the rest as mine.
